Q: is this compatible to be topcoated with an acrylic enamel topcoat?
26 days ago1 Answer
- A: Hi EC2026! Yes, the Majic Gray Rust Preventative Sandable Primer can generally be topcoated with an acrylic enamel topcoat, as it is an oil/alkyd-based formula that is compatible with most standard enamels.25 days agoHelpful?
Q: Can I top coat this without sanding?
3 years ago1 Answer
- A: Please reach out to the manufacturer at (800) 323-7545 for more information. https://www.majicpaints.com/contact-us/3 years agoHelpful?
Q: Do I have to use the hardener as well as the reducer when using this product
5 years ago1 Answer
- A: Majic Rust Preventatitve Sandable Gray Primer is a high solids, heavily pigmented, oil/alkyd primer that exhibits outstanding adhesion and excellent corrosion resistance. For spray application, we recommend that Sandable Gray Primer be reduced at a ratio of 8:1, with Majic Reducer (#8-0750), and between 5-10% for brush and roll application. Majic Catalyst Hardener is NOT to be used with Majic Primers, or Clear Coat. When applying Majic Sandable Gray Primer, apply in thin coats (recommended 2.5-3.0 mils wet), and allow 24 hours (minimum) to dry between coats, or before top-coating. Too heavy an application, and/or re-coating too soon will result in a film that won’t dry “hard” for several days…or longer. Please read, and follow, all label directions carefully.5 years agoHelpful?

Unless you lay down an impossibly thin coat this stuff, it will stay tacky for days or longer even under ideal drying conditions. Do not use it.

Did the job
I agree to some extent with some reviews that this product does not seem to dry super hard. However, This did dry fine for what I'm doing. I think the slight softness might add some measure of durability.
Follow the directions and apply THIN coats. I'm not preparing my farm implements for the concourse. I want them protected and looking respectable. If you want rock hard urethane primer and a mirror finish, you need to pay 5x the price and get PPG or Sikkens or Dupont automotive finishes.
I still don't know if you can add top coat without sanding. The dope than answered my question said to call the manufacturer(why bother if you don't know anything?)

Absolutely the worst primer you can buy
Primer doesn't dry. Days later, 80 degree days, and it's still soft. It's as if I floated a thin layer of putty. Some others have commented that this primer was purchased because the store was out of Rustoleum. If this is the case for you, just buy some silly putty and you'll get the same results. Garbage product.
No, I do not recommend this product.
