WHEN YOU STOP, IT STOPS: Chapin's 89620B tow-behind spreader starts when you start and stops when you stop, thanks to the auto-stop dual impeller. Say goodbye to wasted product and burned lawns and no more fumbling for control. It's constructed to handle tough terrain around your farm, field and acreage with the oversized poly hopper, powder-coated steel frame, and 14-inch pneumatic tires. Dial in the perfect spread setting with 11 incremental gate adjustments. Backed by Chapin's limited lifetime warranty and our US-based technical support team. We recommend not using large, uneven particles like rock salt, sand or sand mixes, pelletized lime, lime or lime powders with the 89620B.

  • Auto-stop dual impeller: WHEN YOU STOP MOVING, IT STOPS SPREADING. Waste less fertilizer and seed; no reaching back to turn off the spreader; less worry about burnt lawns due to an uneven application of product
  • Designed by Chapin: designed by Chapin and covered by a limited lifetime warranty; US-based customer service and technical support, located in Batavia, NY
  • Oversized poly hopper: heavy-duty poly hopper, supported on a powder-coated steel frame and quickly hooks to a hitch on the back of an ATV, UTV or tractor; bearings are oil-impregnated to minimize friction on the axle and gearbox
  • Multiple gate adjustments: 11 incremental gate adjustments to dial in the perfect application of seed, fertilizer, or granular solution
  • 14-inch pneumatic tires: designed to handle uneven farm land and acreage, or a large backyard
  • Note: not recommended for use with large, uneven particles products like rock salt, sand or sand mixes, pelletized lime, lime or lime powders; powdered materials will bind up the gears and restrict use

Q: Why do you not recommend spreading pelletized lime? This is the main reason I won’t a pull behind spreader.

1 Answer
  • AI-generated, Human-approved
A: Pelletized lime is not recommended because large, uneven particles and powdered materials can bind up the gears and restrict the use of the spreader. This can lead to fumbling for control or potential damage to the unit's internal components.

Great Spreader With Some Consideration

This is a great tow behind spreader. I’ve owned two and these work great and last a long time if you do a couple things. 1) Grease the spreader really good before you use it for the first time. 2) The design flaw is in the hitch and requires a modification. You have two choices: put in a longer axle and/or replace the hitch triangle with 1/4 plate steel on the top and bottom. The spreader wants to tip over on hills when used as is and doing either modification will prevent that from happening.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Chapin spreader works well

The spreader seems to be well made and works well. The only issue I had is that the rain cover fits too tightly so it is hard to install. That’s not a big deal since I would rarely need it. I like the auto start/stop feature. You don’t waste product. I seeded and fertilized probably an acre and it was nice that I didn’t have to constantly be refilling it like I would with a small walk behind unit.

Poor Assembly!!!

Purchased this “assembled” from my store in Covington , LA - however, it was horribly assembled to say the least…… Had to take it apart, adjust the braces and add two screws that had been left out…….. would have returned it had I not already put fertilizer in it and needed to get the fertilizer out before it rained. After I properly assembled it - it worked really well. I will indeed check anything very closely that may be “assembled “ from this location.

Great product

This spreader works better than any I’ve used the last 20 years. I like the mechanism to open the hole vs others with the long handle

Yes, I recommend this product.
