Rated 3 out of 5 by from Install issues: at least 30', but no more than 20' I bought this fence charger for a three-sided dog run along side of my house. The concern I have with this fence charger is in the instructions to install it. It says not to run an extension cord to it, so that means I need to plug it in at the house. No problem. It says to mount it under shelter. Again, no problem because I have an outlet on the covered porch. Now what do I do about the grounding system? Instructions say it should not be more than 20 ft from the fence controller. The problem is that the ground systems also needs to be at least 30 feet from the house because of "stray voltage", because that's were I have buried phone wires and an underground copper line for my propane tank. So where do I put the grounding system? Go figure. So, I still keep my dog on a tie-out for now, until I have time to discuss this on the phone with a help line. I suggest people figure out the installation issues before purchasing one, to make sure you can meet the requirements.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent when used within reason and properly gro The picture and description refers to the older model, it has actually been redesigned and is now the EA5M-Z. If you go to Zareba's website you will see it is .1 joules, 1VA and 6350 volts unloaded. You can expect a 20% drop when actually installed, so figure somewhere around 5000 volts. We have about one acre fenced in for our pair of goats. We have 48in 4x4 sheep fencing and one strand of hot wire at about 55 in high. We only have concerns with the goats getting out along about a 500 ft length of the fence line. With 17g aluminum wire and one 8 ft galvanized ground rod completely buried, we used 12g wire to make the ground and hot jumper connection. The lead goat (the one who started jumping the fence and is the reason for the addition of the electrified wire) jumped up to the fence and touched her nose briefly to the hot wire before yelping and taking off. She hasn't gotten close to the fence since. Have reasonable expectations of what this can do and get a significant ground system (grounding is more important really than the acre or joule rating within reason).
