Safe alternative to heat lamps

Didn't like the idea of heat lamps due to fire risk and cost. I raised chicks in my laundry room for 3-4 weeks under it. Only 2 distances for brooding heater but birds gradually started getting away from it on their own. I also started turning it off for periods to allow them to adjust to my garage temps (30s-40s). I did not do the 5 degrees per week thing that most people recommended. Once most of the feathers were out I put them in the garage in larger confinement. I covered most of it and turn the heater on. Doesn't make it super warm but certainly different than outside the confinement. Birds spent time near it as needed. Not 8 weeks old and probably ready to go outside into coop (It's February in NJ). I'm going to run the heater in the coop when it drops below 30 to be safe because even though they're fully feathered I'm nervous about it. They've piled pine shavings against the heater without any issues so far. My only gripe would be to put the selector switch farther from the unit itself because it ends up inside my enclosure.

Be careful

Product seems okay so far after only a week. One thing though, a baby chick got their foot stuck on the mounting hole in the back of the unit. Chick was okay, but we covered these holes with tape.

DO NOT USE THIS IN BROODER FOR NEW BABY CHICKS

I wish I had paid attention to the negative reviews. DO NOT USE THIS HEATER FOR BROODING BABY CHICKS. My newbies were so cold under the panel (set at the lowest level) that they could not move to eat or drink. The surface in "brooder mode" barely gets warm enough to be detected by touch. We returned to the store and got an old-fashioned heat lamp in time to save most of them - I think we will only lose a couple of chicks. I only gave a two-star review because I don't know if the "heater" mode works. For sure the "brooder" mode doesn't! Fortunately, my TSC store provides excellent service and will allow me to return this for credit. TRACTOR SUPPLY - YOU NEED TO PULL THIS PRODUCT FROM YOUR INVENTORY, PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THE REVIEWS.

Does not provide warmth.

This heating panel did not provide very much heat or warmth for my hens. I gave it 48 hours but realized it will not be sufficient enough to keep them warm. I would not recommend this product.

Low quality

I bought this as supplemental heat in my chicken coop. It does not heat up hardly at all. I have to have my hand directly on it to really feel the heat. There are two settings. One is Brooder and one is heater mode. One is supposed to be hotter I tried using this for chicks and all of them died. So I decided to place it out in my coupe with my big hands as supplemental heat for my silkies, but they don’t even attempt to use it because it really does not put off heat really upset about wasting 70 bucks.
