Q: Is this feed suitable for ducklings?

1 Answer
  • A: Per an article on our page about what to feed ducks: While baby duck food is designed to meet the B3 needs of ducklings, chicken starter feed is not and can result in a Niacin deficiency in ducks. If you use chicken starter feed, brewer’s yeast is a good and readily available niacin supplement for ducks to incorporate into their diet. They Like It!

I love that it is Non-GMO and has all the nutrients I've purchased separately in the past to make a grain feed for the adults. I also love the price! I currently have 26 chickens, of those, 14 are separate in a mix of 50/50 juvenile chicks and laying adults. Since they live with the chicks under 18 weeks, I'm feeding everyone this mix (layer diets aren't safe for chicks, too much calcium). They definitely prefer it over the Kalmbach non-gmo chick crumble I had them on (which also went way up in price at my feed store). I previously fed Scratch & Peck but I no longer have an affordable way to buy it without paying insane shipping rates, so this is my happy medium with added benefits. One such benefit that was an issue with feeding S & P was the additional nutrients were just loose with the grains and not always consumed, where with this feed they're compacted into the crumble bits and can't be missed. To be fair, I think most people who uses S&P add water and ferment it, but that wasn't a plausible option for us, so there were a lot of wasted nutrients). I hate calling it a happy medium, but I'm new to it and so are the ladies, it'll take some time to decide how much I like/dislike it in the coming months. I did happen to notice that the corn to feed ratio is a lot less than other brands that have corn in the feed -- the Cluck & Co ratio has me feeling like it's an added feed nutrient instead of a cheap filler like others I've tried (not mentioned above). Despite being fed a chick feed, the adult eggs are still fine -- deep orange yolks, and I can still supply them with access to oyster shell to make up for their current calcium defenciency (the chicks pay no mind to the oyster shell). Also, when my hens really like a special treat, they chatter amongst themselves while enjoying it -- they were doing that the first time eating this brand! One thing I'd like to address: Canola grade rapeseed meal is safe in livestock/poultry feed = that's what this product uses, it can be fed in as high as 25-30% of the diet. Regular rapeseed oil isn't digested well by animals without the ability to ruminate (regurgitate and re-chew), and shouldn't be used as more than 5% in adult poultry and 2-3% in chick feed = NOT contained in this feed. You're welcome to do your own research on this, but I felt I should address this as the previous reviewer was giving misinformation probably based more on confusion than ill intent.

Canola Meal is a Disqualifier

I do not want most of the protein coming from canola meal (rapeseed), which is a by-product of canola oil manufacturing. Garbage and have read that it isn't palatable. The rest of the formula looks good though. Too bad....

No thanks, bad texture

The feed is too big for new chicks and I have to grind it up with a mortar and pestle for them to eat. I don't know if I would call this crumble. I'm not sure it has good nutrition because chick died day two on it and refused to eat it without me adding black soldier fly larvae and grinding it up.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Great feed

Chicks loved it and some adult chickens have been sneaking it and loved it as well. I allowed it as the adults were going through their fall molt and the extra protein helped them to recover quickly. You would think it was spring already as my hens came into lay quicker this time around. Not sure what is all in it but the honeybees love it and I never see them around the other feed. Will definitely purchase more.

Yes, I recommend this product.
