Clevis Pins

A clevis pin is the part that holds a pivoting connection together without locking it stiff. It runs through the holes of a clevis connector or yoke, keeping the joint intact while both sides stay free to move. Zinc-plated and stainless steel are the two common finishes, with diameters sized to the specific connector. Adjustable clevis pins have a hole near the end through which a cotter or hairpin is threaded to hold the pin in place once installed. Square locking pins work differently, using a built-in clip that snaps into a channel, eliminating the need for a separate lock.

Cotter Pins

The job of a cotter pin is to keep another fastener from moving once it's set. On a traditional split-pin, the two legs spread through a hole in the shaft and bend flat, holding the assembly together with no tools required. Hairpin cotter pins use a bent wire loop instead, which clips on quickly and comes off just as fast for connections that need regular access. Multi-size sets mean the right diameter is on hand without digging through loose hardware.

Tension Pins

A tension pin holds by gripping the walls of the hole it sits in, not by bending, clipping or threading. The slotted tube compresses when driven in, then tries to expand back to its original shape, which locks it firmly in place. That grip holds a shaft, collar or gear in position without any additional hardware securing it from the outside. Roll pins and spring pins have the same design under different names, and they can substitute for each other in most applications.
