Q: What is the roof material made of?

- A: Hi Berylynne, The Sails are designed for shade and privacy and they are not translucent. Our Shades are made of HDPE, (High Density Polyethylene) the same resilient material used to produce heavy-duty storage totes. Technology has found a way to turn that material into a monofilament and tape to allow for a woven construction resulting in a long-lasting strong, pre-stretched shade that will protect you from 85% of harmful UVA and UVB rays. They are easy to wash and keep clean, are stain-resistant and will not mold or mildew. They also come with a density of 300grams per square foot. They also reduce wind, only letting 15% air pass through the shade sail. Our Shade Sails will stop a misting, but rain will pass through as they are not waterproof. It lays flat once attached to the pergola and is not sloped in any way to have a run off for rain. We do recommend taking down the shade sail in harsh weather, high winds above 35mph/50km and before the winter.5 years agoHelpful?
