This log splitter does an excellent job splitting all kinds of wood types. I have been successful with hard woods like oak and elm. It splits them easily and cleanly. We are able to split logs up to over 12-18 inches in diameter with no problem. It's been a great addition to our family as we are loving the ability to quickly and easily split up wood for our fireplace! We tried other splitters and they were not able to split harder woods or medium logs.

We purchased this splitter several years ago as an addition to our decades old 20 ton gas splitter, and we LOVE it! Because it is small enough to fit under the roof of the woodshed we can use it all winter to custom split wood if we need a particular size for the stove (we have 3) it will be used for - particularly the wood cookstove. It splits hard oak and soft fir alike and a much bigger diameter than we expected.
We save the knotty oak for the big splitter, but short of that it handles whatever we have given it - fir, maple, cypress, pine, black oak, white oak, tan oak, and madrone.
Yes, I recommend this product.
