Q: Is this non gmo

1 Answer
  • Standlee® Product Expert
A: Hi there! As of December 1, 2013, Standlee has a limited amount of GMO Alfalfa and Alfalfa Blended products in retail outlets. GMO Alfalfa could be found in cubes, pellets, chopped or bales. We wish to emphasize that Roundup is not used in our farming practices, however. Standlee Premium Products recognizes and respects that consumers appreciate a variety of product choices. Therefore, Standlee provides non-GMO straight Timothy Grass and Orchard Grass options across formats. (IE: Orchard Grass Pellets, Timothy Grass Pellets & Bales)

Q: Which alfalfa product would be best to fertilize roses

1 Answer
  • A: Thank you for your question. While some gardeners use alfalfa-based products around roses, the Standlee Premium Alfalfa Pellets are formulated and marketed as horse feed rather than a garden fertilizer. For fertilizing roses, we recommend choosing a product specifically labeled for use on roses, flowering plants, or gardens to ensure proper nutrient content and application guidance.

A: These alfalfa pellets are made from high-quality forage in Idaho, which may reduce risks associated with beetles found in other regions. While one reviewer noted that alfalfa bales from Texas may contain blister beetles, this specific product is manufactured in the USA with care to provide a safe and stomach-friendly feed option.

Q: Do alfalfa pellets NEED to be soaked or can they be fed dry to a horse?

  • Standlee® Product Expert
A: Great question. Standlee recommends you soak the pellets in case of choke. However, you know your horse better than we do so if you feed pellets already that are not soaked you should be fine.

Q: Has this been sprayed or treated with chemicals?

1 Answer
  • Standlee® Product Expert
A: Great question. Yes the Premium Alfalfa is sprayed. We do have an organic alfalfa pellet that is not. Here are the products we use for the premium. Alfalfa Herbicides: Sencor (metribuzin), Select (Clethodim), or Raptor (ammonium salt) – Only one herbicide is used per year, depending on the specific weeds targeted and the growth stage of the crop. Insecticides: Mustang Max (S-Cyano) and Lorsban (chlorpyrifos) are applied once or twice annually as needed. I would also like to mention Roundup or Grazon is not used on any Standlee Product

Q: can a bred heifer eat this

1 Answer
  • Standlee® Product Expert
A: Alfalfa is commonly used in gestation diets for cattle because it provides: High-quality protein Digestible fiber Calcium and essential minerals Research shows alfalfa hay is safely fed to pregnant cows and does not inherently cause metabolic issues when balanced correctly Supplementing pregnant cattle with alfalfa can even support calf development and overall nutrition Don’t overfeed Alfalfa is high in protein and calcium Too much can: Make heifers overly “fleshy” (over-conditioned) Increase risk of calving difficulty Create mineral imbalances 2. Balance the ration Pregnant heifers still need: Grass hay or lower-protein forage Proper mineral supplementation Alfalfa pellets should be a portion of the diet, not 100% of it 3. Introduce gradually Switching too quickly to pellets can upset rumen digestion Always transition over 7–10 days 4. Watch for bloat (especially with rich diets) Alfalfa is more “rich” than grass hay Monitor intake and body condition

Nice Product

Our TS Started carrying this brand recently and I must say, I am in love! The timothy/alfalfa pellets are great also! I have a 29 year old QH that has dental issues but he can eat these, with no choke or problems, just fine! I keep them in front of him, free choice, and he keeps his weight all winter long! Smells so good, I want to eat them! Excellent product!

Alfalfa pellets

It’s more like pellets with powder. I’d say most of the bags I got was about 60% pellets to 40% powder. I will avoid purchasing this again.

Apparently delicious.

Love the beet pellets. They take a little planning to prep, since you have to soak them, but it's not a big deal. I wasn't sure how my horse would like them, as she wasn't a fan of other soaked pellets, but she loves them. Even if I make them a little soupier in hot weather, she eats it with no fuss. The only downside is that I have to hide her bucket while I'm getting the feed ready, because she gets overly excited and very sad when she realizes she's not getting her food immediately. But I consider that a positive sign.

Yes, I recommend this product.
