Compressed Bale

Premium Organic Alfalfa Grab & Go Compressed Bales are formed by allowing Standlee Premium Western Forage to grow to the proper stage of maturity, cutting the plants, allowing them to sun-cure (dry) to an acceptable moisture level and baling the forage at the optimal time. This product is USDA certified organic and GMO-free, with no artificial colors, flavors or chemicals added. Sustainable and ecologically grown ingredients provide a premium organic feed alternative for animals. Standlee creates Grab & Go compressed bales of forage from a large 4'x4'x8' bale that is put through a press, sliced horizontally, pushed onto a scale, weighed, compressed, banded and then shrink-wrapped. Alfalfa forage is low in sugar, moderately high in protein, high in calories and digestible fiber. Always store forages in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area. As long as the product is properly stored, forages can last for well over a year or more. Available in approximately 50 lbs. bales.

  • 16% Protein - high protein level ideal choice for performance horses
  • Certified Organic - Can be an important part of a holistic approach to equine health and well-being
  • Natural forage length - mimics grazing, slows intake, stimulates chewing and minimizes digestive upset, may help eliminate boredom and prevent stall vices
  • Non-GMO - Free from genetically modified organisms and other harmful chemicals, providing peace of mind for horse owners concerned about the quality of their horse's hay
  • Stomach Friendly - Calcium levels can reduce the risk of stomach ulcers
  • Low Starch - A great option for horses on restricted diets, providing essential nutrition without excess carbohydrates
  • Shrink-wrapped - No product loss or mess in transit
  • Efficient Storage - Convenient for horse owners with limited storage capacity
  • Easy Travel - Ideal for horse owners who travel frequently with their horses to shows or events
  • Expands and flakes - Physical form allows visual inspection of quality and consistency
  • Sun-cured - Retains maximum nutritional value and freshness, ensuring optimal health benefits for your horse
  • Made in USA - Made in Idaho with care with the highest-quality forage in the USA

Q&As

1 - 10 of 12 Questions

Q: What Cutting is this?

1 Answer
  • A: Howdy neighbor! While this specific Standlee bale does not list a cutting number on the package, the forage is harvested at peak maturity to guarantee a consistent, Premium-grade nutritional profile in every block. Physically, it mirrors a high-quality second cutting, delivering a vibrant green color, rich leafiness, and a sweet aroma that your animals will love. Because it is double-compressed, simply cut the bands a few hours before feeding to let the fresh flakes expand naturally!

Q: I appreciate that you've included the following: "Standlee Premium Western Forage uses herbicides[...]" If I'd like to use your organic product as a mulch, will the herbicide inhibit organic fruit and/or vegetable growth, or cause any other issues?

1 Answer
  • A: Hello, thank you for your question. Per the vendor, "Our organic alfalfa products, including the Premium Organic Alfalfa Grab and Go Compressed Hay Bale (50 lb) and organic alfalfa pellets, are grown and processed in compliance with USDA organic standards. This means no synthetic herbicides or pesticides, including Raptor, Sencor, or Select, are used in the production of these certified organic products. Any conflicting information you may have seen is likely referencing our conventional (non-organic) alfalfa products, which may use approved herbicides in standard agricultural practices. You can safely incorporate our organic hay and pellets into your garden or compost without concern for persistent synthetic herbicides affecting your fruits or vegetables."

Q: Is this okay for rabbits?

1 Answer
  • A: Hi, While the Standlee Premium Western Forage Premium Organic Alfalfa Grab and Go Compressed Hay Bale is generally safe for rabbits, it's important to note that it's primarily designed for livestock. Standlee recommends using their "Hand Selected Forage" products specifically designed for small animals like rabbits.

  • Standlee® Product Expert
A: How Our Organic Forage is Produced Our organic alfalfa is grown and processed according to federal organic guidelines, which regulate: Soil quality Pest and weed control Use of natural additives At Standlee Premium Western Forage, we prioritize natural, physical, mechanical, and biologically based farming methods to produce high-quality, sustainable organic forage. Q: Has this hay been sprayed with glyphosate or any other weed, fungus, mold inhibitor? Thank you

1 Answer
  • Standlee® Product Expert
A: Thank you for reaching out to us; your communication is greatly appreciated. Standlee Premium Western Forage uses herbicides and pesticides on an occasional basis, not annually, as insect infestations typically occur every other year or every two to three years. It's important to emphasize that neither Roundup nor Grazon is part of our practices. For our Alfalfa crop, we employ either Sencor (metribuzin), Select (Clethodim), or Raptor (ammonium salt) herbicides, but never more than one of these in a given year. The choice of herbicide depends on the specific weed targeted and the crop's growth stage. In terms of insecticide, we use Mustang Max (S-Cyano) and Lorsban (chlorpyrifos) once or twice annually.

Q: what square footage in a garden would the cover at 3 inches deep

1 Answer
  • Standlee® Product Expert
A: While we haven't conducted specific measurement testing for gardening needs, we estimate that each bale should cover around 35-40 square feet. However, please note that this is an approximate figure based on our knowledge, and we recommend trying it out to confirm its suitability for your specific requirements. Molded bale

Ordered two bales to be delivered to the store. Opened one up and it was molded through. The other bales was fine. Not what I’d expect for pricey bales of hay. Store wouldn’t refund me and I called customer care but didn’t want to deal with the hassle. TSC, I have pictures of you are able to make this right via a review report?

I love having an organic option.

I love that this is organic and my horse loves it. I find that the leaves fall off really easily, so it's messy to move without losing some of it. My horse is sort of eating stems and then has a pile of leaves to pick up. If I dump the leaves into a bucket he's happy to clean them up, but some of them get lost in the shavings in his stall.

Excellent hay

Love this! The package arrived clean hay dust free good quality. I watched the Standlee Farm video recommended to cut strings to let it expand 24 hours. It expanded nicely . if too dry from the plastic & shipping you can water mist it lightly. This makes a great option for a couple of goats

I paid a premium and received mediocre product

I can't tell you how disappointed I was when I opened this bag. I had such high hopes that paying an extra $10 a bag would be worth it. I've been talking with Standlee directly about the poor quality of their grab and go alfalfa. You can't grab anything! There are no flakes. It falls apart in your hands. Organic is the same dry, dusty stuff that they've been selling for the past year; just more expensive. :-(
