Better then ALL THE REST
We have 47 head of horses and run 14 tanks all 100 gallon. This is the only heater we use! The rest no matter the price are junk!. Note: all brands of heaters after time can shock or rust or stop working...between horses pawling them and being trampled ect dontvexpect any heater to last for life , if you do you are not for the horse business . we have had most of our heaters going on 8 yrs. 1 did finally rust out and one did stop working but considering how many we use and the fact the abuse they go through I am very very happy. You can take a frozen 100 gallon tank throw it on top and watch it heat a hole up . it does wonders. Won't melt even the cheapest plastic blue containers( for parties for ice and drinks ect) that you buy for $4. If it runs dry it shuts off no melting... Can any others say that! Lays in bottom out of way heats till there is no water , does not need to be samurged to work. Heck we hadfrozen pipes no water and dumped snow on this heater and it melted it and have us a trough of water, yeah that's a heater..I'm sure any heater can go wrong but I have used them all and found this one really really is so far greater then the rest!!!!!!!

Reliable, but . . .
I used one of these for three years. Worked great--no ice--until yesterday; my horses got a shock when they tried to drink from the trough. Pulled the unit out and found rusty-looking stains around the seam of the plastic housing where the cord attaches. The animals didn't take to it kindly. Looking for a different type to replace this one.

Easy to use de-icer
The de-icer seems to work well. I am reluctant to leave it plugged in around my horses as they are likely to pull it out of the trough and break it.

Great for under 25 gal. Needs external control.
Low power heater (250watt) is perfect for a 20 gallon trough for 65 chickens. They drink 2 gallons per day In Nov/Dec (4 oz. each chcken). I was dissapointed that this heater didnt shut off in couple hours until water got 78⁰F!! Big waste of energy. If this heater ran 24 hours a day all month, would cost $45/mo. in electric. So I bought another Inkbird ITC-308 wifi temperature controller for $50 ($35 without wifi control). Floated temperature probe (with styrafoam) on top, where ice forms. I can now keep water slightly above freezing for around
7 bucks a month. Controller paid for itself in just over a month of savings. This 250 watt heater rose a 6½ gallon bucket of 35⁰ water, approx. 25⁰ higher in 1 hour of continuous running. Also rose 20 gallons of 33⁰ water, 18-20⁰ higher in 1 hour with controller set high enough to not remove power to heater. Could be a great economical heater if it came with more precise temperature control. Otherwise electric cost tripples the cost of this heater every winter.
Yes, I recommend this product.

Works, but way beyond just "keeping ice off"
Product states it only turns on near freezing and cuts off automatically. It specifies it's not a "heater" and will only "de-ice" so one would assume it probably cuts off by 40F or so, but there is no info anywhere about a shut off temp. My 25 gallon water barrel was 32F with thick ice around the edges when I put the de-icer in overnight. By morning, it was 66F. For a product that advertises it only warms enough to keep ice off, 66F was surprisingly high.
Product definitely works but I wouldn't leave it unattended for long if the water temperature matters to you. For a water trough, it's fine other than wasted energy heating it so high. If using in water that has fish, I's check water temp often and not leave the de-icer unattended.
