The brightness of the LEDs can vary depending on the fence voltage and ambient lighting, so the tester is easiest to read in shaded conditions. To verify the tester is working properly, try testing it on a fence with a known voltage and make sure the probe is inserted firmly into the ground while the tester tip makes good contact with the fence wire.
