Voltage Testers

These let you measure current along your fence line, making sure it's consistent. They can tell you whether there’s low or no voltage, or if you have a ground issue. Typically, a fence should be in the range of 2,000 to 10,000 volts, depending on the type you’re building.

Digital Fault Finders

Letting you compare voltage and current readings, these help you locate spots where the current has stopped flowing, including shorts, open circuits and broken wires, so you can troubleshoot accordingly. Wire Cutters

You’ll need crimpers to secure a connection between wire or steel cables and crimp sleeves (the copper or aluminum ferrules used to help prevent fraying or severing). They’re especially helpful when you’re working with high-tensile fence wire.

Wire Joiners

These connect sections of fence to one another while improving conductivity and reducing arcing and sparking. Ideal for building temporary fencing or something longer-term, you can use them on both wire and tape. Clamps are one type; they can help securely connect wire to posts.

Use measuring tape to get post spacing correct, and pick up a hand auger to dig holes for wood, metal or T-posts – especially for the corners, ends and braces. Set them using a post driver and use a level to make sure they’re plumb. You’ll also want a hammer for driving staples or nails, which secure your insulators to the posts.
