A Schirmer Tear Test (STT) is a safe, easy way to measure tear production in dogs. With these Schirmer Tear Test Strips, you can conduct this test to help diagnose ocular disease, verify lacrimal gland function and check on dogs who have excessively watery or dry eyes. To use, place the rounded tip of the test strip against the dog's cornea, and keep it in place for 1 minute. These Schirmer Tear Test strips are easy to use and are sold in 100 ct. boxes. How it Works
This test is a 5mm x 35mm strip of Whatman no. 41 filter paper. It has been impregnated with blue dye and features 1mm lines. Each packaged in a plastic sleeve, the tests are first bent at a notch that is 5mm below the rounded tip. This step should be done while the test is still packaged, preventing strip contamination. After the package is opened, the rounded tip should be placed within the lower conjunctival fornix, making contact with the cornea. This is near the junction of the temporal and middle third of the eyelid. Keep the test in place for exactly one minute. Tear production may be measured by visualizing the migration of the dye on the test strip (the distance measured in millimeters), then recorded.
