Greatness starts on day one. Purina Start & Grow Medicated chicken feed contains amprolium (not an antibiotic) to aid in the prevention of coccidiosis. Our feed gives your chicks a strong start and enhances early hen development. Raise chicks from day one to laying age (18-20 weeks) with feed that supports their digestive health and immune function - and aids in the protection against coccidiosis where immunity is not desired.
If your birds have not been vaccinated for coccidiosis or if you're unsure of their vaccination status, we recommend feeding your birds Purina Start & Grow Medicated. Use only as directed.

Feed Purina Start & Grow Medicated feed to layer chicks from day one through week 18 as at least 90 percent of the chick's diet.
Transition to Purina Layena, or Layena+ Omega-3 feed at week 18.Use as the sole source of amprolium. Do not change the litter while giving this feed unless absolutely necessary. If losses exceed 0.5% in a two (2) day period, obtain an accurate diagnosis, and follow the instructions of your veterinarian or poultry pathologist. Losses may result from intercurrent disease or other conditions under field conditions. In replacement flocks, the grower must expect that excessive exposure to one or more species may overwhelm the drug in some flocks and prompt treatment will be required. Do not use in feeds containing bentonite.Important: Please consult the feed tag sewn onto this bag for specific feeding instructions.

Q: I have two adult chickens and six 10-week-old chicks. They all share the same run so the adult chickens will have access to the chicks feed. Can I feed all of them this feed until they are 18 weeks old and then change all of them over to the adult feed?
5 months ago- A: Yes, it is fine to have them all on the Start and Grow as long as you offer oyster shell to supplement the calcium for your adult hens if they are laying. Around 18 weeks you can gradually switch them all over to a Layer feed.5 months agoHelpful?
Q: Does this food contain hormones?
8 months ago- A: No, there are no added hormones in any poultry feed. Federal law prohibits the use of hormones in animal feed. As grains require and make their own set of hormones to grow, the feed can contain hormones that are inherently within the grains used in the making of the feed. Anything that lives and grows requires hormones to do so.8 months agoHelpful?
Q: Is this safe to give to peachicks?
10 months ago- A: A better option for the peachicks is Purina Game Bird Starter.10 months agoHelpful?
Q: I just brought home 11 week old chickens. I don’t know what they were eating before. Can/should I feed them this until 18 weeks?
10 months ago- A: Yes, we would suggest keeping them on this feed until 18 weeks of age or they start to lay eggs, whichever comes first.10 months agoHelpful?
Q: If my chicks were not on this from birth, can I switch at 12 weeks??
10 months ago- A: Purina recommends keeping your chicks on the Purina Start and Grow product until they are 18 weeks of age or begin laying eggs whichever comes first. Then switching female hens to a Layer feed to ensure you are meeting their nutrient requirements for egg production.10 months agoHelpful?
Q: Why does it say not to clean the bedding while feeding this product
11 months ago- A: This is a FDA/USDA directive that we are required to put on the tag. The presence of the Amprolium in the feces helps to control coccidia in the environment, but so does keeping the litter clean and dry.11 months agoHelpful?
Q: Does this food contain grit or do we need to add it?
11 months ago- A: Birds being fed a complete feed diet like ours, do not need grit. If you start treating them with scratch grains (which we don't recommend introducing until they are 18 weeks old) then grit would help them process it a little more easily.11 months agoHelpful?
Q: Can i eat any eggs layed while chickens are eating this feed
a year ago- A: Hello, thank you for your question. Per the vendor, "You may safely eat the eggs and meat if the hen has consumed the medicated crumbles. The Amprolium stays in the digestive tract of the animal and is not passed into the eggs or muscle." However, you just discontinue use of this feed once your chickens have started laying eggs.a year agoHelpful?
Q: Why can't I add this to my cart?? Yried multiple times.
a year ago- A: I'm sorry to hear you are having issues but you will need to contact Tractor Supply customer service for assistance. Purina doesn't have anything to do with their online ordering system/processes.a year agoHelpful?
Q: How long should I feed the chicks this food?
a year ago- A: The general recommendation is to feed the Start and Grow feed to chicks until they reach 18 weeks of age or begin laying eggs, at which time you can switch to a layer product.a year agoHelpful?
