Q&As

1 - 10 of 10 Questions

Q: I got 4 chicks. 2 have now turned out to be roosters and the other two are laying brown eggs. If there’s only “90% chance,” why did I receive half of the chickens as male and only 15% chance they lay brown but yet 100% of my hens (2) are laying brown?

Q: Do all Starlight Greens turn out red, or just a few of them, like the yellow chicks?

A: Hi Simmons11, Most all Starlight Greens are a rusty red color as adults. Thanks for your question!

Q: I ordered green eggers, and see other Q&A's saying theirs are laying tan/brown eggs. Is there anything that needs to be in their diet to get the green eggs? Grass?

1 Answer
  • Tony
A: Hi Rhklein89! There is a chance (15%) that this hybrid breed would produce a tan egg instead of the green egg that we breed them to produce. This is just how Mother Nature factors in and there is nothing external that would affect the egg shell color. Diet will affect the quality of the actual egg itself and the more varied the more nutritious the egg will be. Thanks for your question!

Q: I ordered green eggers, on Tractor Supply website and had to list a local Tractor Supply as My Store. I listed the one in Griffin, GA, but live in Hampton, GA. Are the chic's shipping to the Griffin Post Office or the Hampton Post Office

1 Answer
  • A: Chicks can not be shipped to the store, so they should ship to the post office that's closest to the zip code that was put in when you entered your home address.

A: Hi wantao, Currently we have chick orders shipping out 10-14 days after the order is placed online. You will receive a shipping confirmation email once your order ships. Your estimated ship date is based on the availability and hatch of your assigned hatch date. When Mother Nature is involved we are required to be more flexible with live orders than you would need to be with merchandise. Thanks for your question and your patience.

Q: Can these be used as dual birds? Both meat and eggs?

1 Answer
  • Tony
A: While any chicken can be utilized as a dual purpose bird, there are some that are better suited. The Starlight Green Egger is not as robust as some other breeds so the processed weight would be on the smaller side.

I love mine!

I bought 4 starlights May 2020, all are wonderful hens. Three of them are varying degrees of tan and white ombre that lay green eggs, and one is gold, tan, and black that lays the cutest little light tan eggs! She is in the mere 5% that lays this color. Two of my starlights are very social and friendly too--always the first to be all up in my face when I have food. I love the attention though!

No Green Layers

Bought a bunch of supposedly Starlight Green Eggers last summer that are now starting to lay. Tan eggs, not green. I was so excited for green eggs so didn’t mind paying a little more for them. Now I’m annoyed lol

Nice healthy chickens, no green eggs!

I bought 2 of these "green eggers" and 4 Midnight Marans in our local Tractor Supply. I was very happy that they finally had some new varieties, usually just have Rhode Island Reds, Easter Eggers, Buff Orps... At least this is the first time that I bought 6 chicks that I got all pullets, no roos! But not a single green egg to be had. And not even one from the batch of 10 "Olive Eggers" that I ordered here last time. If you want multi-colored eggs, stick with the Easter Eggers. Although I have gotten a few roosters in those batches, they do consistently lay blue and green eggs with maybe a couple brown-eggers.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Not green eggs

I bought EIGHT of them this year in store and with a 5% chance of laying brown eggs I'm considering the lottery. NOT ONE BIRD LAYS GREEN EGGS. All brown. All right. I'll never get chickens at tractor supply again.

No, I do not recommend this product.
