A great number of toxicological, environmental and medical studies have been performed with DMSO to determine the safety of this chemical. It was placed in the safest category by the FDA, class 3 solvents, with low toxic potential. DMSO may cause respiratory irritation, eye irritation, or result in skin reddening, itching and burning. It does not contain chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, other reproductive harm, and is not listed as a carcinogen by regulatory authorities.
