Trimethoprim and sulfadiazine are helpful in horses who require potent systemic antibacterial activity against susceptible organisms. Trimethoprim is effective in blocking the production of tetrahydrofolic acid in bacteria from dihydrofolic acid. It binds to, then reversibly inhibits an enzyme called dihydrofolate reductase. Sulfadiazine works to inhibit dihydrofolic acid bacterial synthesis by competing with para-aminobenzoic acid. These two antibiotic ingredients work together to essentially double down on the bacterial metabolism, depriving bacteria of the nucleic acids and proteins required for multiplication and survival. This product is highly antibacterial and often bactericidal.

Side Effects

Potential adverse reactions include:

• Thrombocytopenia (low count of platelets), anemia (low count of red blood cells), or leukopenia (low count of white blood cells)
• Antibiotic-related diarrhea or colic
• Overgrowth of non-susceptible bacteria
• Swelling, tissue damage, or discomfort at the injection site following intramuscular or subcutaneous injection
• Short-term pruritus (itching) following intravenous injections
• Altered bacterial flora and subsequent appetite reduction, inactivity, weight loss, intestinal inflammation, and abnormal stools in high doses
• Immediate anaphylactic or allergic reaction, resulting in agitation, hives, swelling, or respiration changes, which may be life-threatening and should be treated with epinephrine and followed by emergency veterinary attention
