The extra 3 in. rings at each end of the mouthpiece float independently to disperse pressure across the lip and cheek to make the horse more responsive to the rider's cues. Riders can attach the reins to the floating D outside the cheek rings. This mouthpiece is large enough to allow the rider to pull without injuring the bars.
