- A: Yes, you can trim height to encourage growth below, because when “heading” (making cuts at top of tree) it directs nutrients to travel below which encourage outward, horizontal growth. When pruning a Purple Leaf Plum focus on removing dead or damaged branches, as well as branches that rub against each other (this will prevent further damage). Important factors to consider are: PRUNE ONLY in late winter to early spring when tree is in dormant stage; cut tree at 45 degree angles (just above bud or nodule to encourage new growth); and avoid removing more than one-third of the foliage to prevent stress that could lead to harm.a year agoHelpful?

This is a GORGEOUS tree with dark plum purple leaf colors that really makes your yard pop. This tree transitions from a pink bloom color in spring to a purple leaf color in late spring which provides a unique experience not had by most other ornamental trees. Seems to be a hardy tree so far for here in Missouri and has weathered several droughts so far and held up to heavy wet snow falls.
