  • A: Thank you for asking about this! We would not recommend attempting to install a pet door within an older pet door. We would recommend removing the prior door, then using carpentry/DIY skills or hiring a carpenter to build up inside the cutout as far as would be needed to install a new door that suits your current pup. If your 11 lb. dog has a chest width smaller than 8 1/4", our small size could be a good fit; this would require a cutout size around 6 3/8" wide and around 10 1/8" tall; we would recommend ensuring you use the template that would come with the door to make any needed cuts/frame in around the needed area. This is both to ensure the best fit, and that the shoulder height line on the template can be matched to your dog's measured adult shoulder height. It is worth mentioning, however, that this is not a wall entry door, and a door designed to be installed in walls may be a better fit for your needs. If you would like to discuss options with us, please reach out to our live support team. Our number is 1-800-732-2677, and our hours are Monday through Friday 8 A.M.- 7 P.M. EST.

Q: Will this pet say doggie door go in a wall for up to 7 1/4 inch

1 Answer
  • A: Thank you for asking about this, Lisa! This door is intended for installation in standard doors. Though some customers do choose to install it in a wall, this would require a tunnel to be constructed separately using your own DIY skills, and there would be flap on only one side. For a door designed for wall entry use with a tunnel and flaps at either end, we would recommend considering our wall entry door, seen here- https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/petsafe-petsafe-wall-entry-pet-door-ppa00-16944-1527172 This door is suitable for walls from 4 3/4" - 7 1/4" thick.

Why did you change the design?!

I have purchased many Petsafe Pet doors over the years. And each time I get one the quality has went down. This latest model that I purchased I’m rather disappointed in the design. I wish companies would stop and think. I just purchased a medium plastic door for my new home. Installation was to be expected. But the design! The inside black part that goes inside the cut door isn’t one piece anymore so they don’t even line up correctly. It even mentions it might not, so them please tell me why in the word you would want most of the black part on the outside exposed to the rain and elements! That doesn’t make sense. After I put it up I had to reread the directions because I thought I put it on the door backwards. I ended up taking off and putting the outside door on the inside of the house and the inside part on the outside. It works much better that way and keep the elements from getting inside my home. But the sucky part is, I can not longer lock the door for the inside. So which is worse? Letting the elements and rain get inside my door, or not being able to lock the door unless it’s locked from outside? All you have to do is make it lockable on both of the deal pieces. Then people can have it either way. But the cheap black plastic framing exposed to the rain and bugs and everything else. NO. If I didn’t already have a huge hole cut in my door I’d return it.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Quality is lacking.

Had to upgrade our old classic aluminum door due to petsafe not selling the xl size rubber flap anymore. Let me say, this one is absolute junk. Flimsy plastic, blows open with the slightest breeze. Magnets don't seem to do anything. I'll be super gluing my old flap back together and reinstalling the old one.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Works perfect and easy to install!

This PetSafe doggie door works perfect for my blind 65lb very tall husky! The included instructions and template are easy to read and follow. The total time to install was about 1.5 hours, mainly because I installed it in a metal security door. The door is well made, functions perfectly, and was at a great price. The door also comes with a snap on security cover to keep unwanted critters out! Overall, this is an excellent product. The bonus was I received it two days after I ordered it! Tractor Supply and PetSafe nailed it on this one.
