Q: Would I be able to sand this primer to remove any imperfections before applying a base coat?

1 Answer
  • A: Majic All Purpose Gray Shop Primer is a good quality, hard-drying oil/alkyd coating that provides tight adhesion, good corrosion resistance, and very good hold out of sheened finishes. When applied in strict accordance to the printed directions (with special attention to the recommended applied thickness (not to exceed 3.0 mils wet), and the allowable re-coat time (minimum 24 hours) – this material should be dry enough to sand the primer at 24 hours with 220 grit paper (or finer) – please understand that if the product is applied too heavily, and/or re-coated too soon, the film will not dry “hard” for possibly several days…or longer. Re-coat, and sanding, restrictions may need to be adjusted based on temperature and humidity – Do not thin product, and avoid painting in direct sunlight, or when rain is expected within 8 hours of painting.

Q: Can I use this for refurbished a cattle feed bunk and if so what paint can I cover with.

1 Answer
  • A: This is the vendor's response: Majic AP Enamel Shop Primer Gray is a utility grade, rust-inhibitive oil base primer designed, primarily, for use on clean, dry and properly prepared ferrous metal surfaces. Any rust should be removed by wire brushing, grinding, or blasting before priming, all bare metal needs priming, and new sheet metal should be sanded, or etched, for a better mechanical adhesion with AP Shop Primer. Apply AP Shop Primer by brush, roller or spray, in strict accordance to package directions - with special attention given to recommended applied thickness (thin coats @ 3-4 mils wet) & allowable recoat times (minimum 24 hours). Air, and surface, temps should be above 55° F. , with relative humidity at less than 60% (cooler temps and/or higher humidity will slow drying and cure of oil base products). Do NOT thin product for application, and the use of a catalyst hardener is NOT recommended with Majic All Purpose Primers or Enamels. Once dry, product may be topcoated (finished) with either Majic All Purpose Enamel, or Majic Tractor, Truck & Implement Enamels, again in accordance to package directions. For best results, 2 coats of finish are recommended over primer – and allow ample curing before putting into use.

Q: Looking for recommendations for how to spray. Does this need to be thinned and if so with what?

1 Answer
  • A: Per the manufacturer: Generally, Majic All Purpose Shop Primer requires no reduction for spray (airless or conventional), but if reduction is necessary, or desired, use only Majic Reducer, TSC SKU: 1177119, up to approximately 5% (about 6 ounces per gallon). Do not use a Catalyst Hardener with the All Purpose line of Primers or Finish Enamels. For proper drying, and cure, apply product in thin coats (not to exceed 4.0 mils wet), and allow 24 hours between coats, or before applying finish.

Q: Can I use this all purpose oil based primer and the Majic Catalist hardener to paint a hard deck surface before a top cote of exterior oil based paint?

1 Answer
  • A: Majic All Purpose Enamel Shop Primer Gray is an all purpose, utility enamel. It is fine for use on wood (and other) surfaces, and may be used as a prime coat for oil base, or latex topcoats. The limitations for this product are as follows: Majic AP Primer is not designed for use on wood decks, nor wood surfaces subject to traffic (foot or vehicular). Majic AP Primer, and Enamels, are “ready-to-apply” coatings – Do not thin, and DO NOT MIX WITH CATALYST-HARDENER. Please follow instructions carefully regarding the recommended applied thickness (3.0 mils wet), and allowable re-coat times (minimum 24 hours).

Worked For Me

I read all the negative 1 star reviews and that sucks for all y'all that didn't have much success with this product.. BUT on the other hand this primer WORKED LIKE A CHARM for me.. I went for the good Rust-Oleum spray primer first BUT the dang heat literally evaporated it before making it on the car. So I used a spray gun.. maybe y'all bought some old stuff. Either way it was very easy to work with. Did my whole car in my garage with outside temp at around 112°F. It's not the recommended temp but I had very beautiful results. I barely had to sand between coats. Anyways I would recommend if your budget is tight and don’t have the experience or money to get expensive top notch stuff. Wipes off pretty easy if you accidentally spill it all over like I did lol Never fails. Only thing I didn’t like was the loooong dry time and how strong the smell is.. Had to take breaks so def make sure you wear a good quality respirator!!!!

Yes, I recommend this product.

Horrible primer!

Horrible primer! Do NOT waste your money or time buying this! Primer was basically water even when mixed thoroughly. Even after following instructions to a T, primer was soft and easily scratched with a finger nail more than 24 hours after first coat. I had to sand all this junk off my truck before I could apply Rust-Oleum primer instead. I can't believe TSC even carries this junk!!!

No, I do not recommend this product.

*** DO NOT BUY ***

This product has no place at Tractor Supply. Tractor Supply Serves the Rural paint handyman, not painting professionals who if did paint regularly would not touch this garbage. This product caused me to start over and caused me to remove it from my project and use a primer paint can. I will not let TS have this sale and i will take it back very soon. Tractor Supply please take this off the shelf in your store. its goopy, over oily ,and takes longer than the 14 hours to dry that was written in the directions. It doesn't even dry smooth. Brush strokes become a part of the the finish.

It should be illegal to sell this trash. I wish I would've read the reviews before I wasted my money. Now I gotta waste more to clean off this gooey mess and start over.
