Q: how big will the plums be. I live in Monticello Ga. I'm not a Farmer so if I follow your planting directions, what are my chances of successfully getting the trees to survive?

1 Answer
  • A: Thank you for your question. Methley plums are typically medium-sized, about 1½ to 2 inches in diameter. This variety grows well in Georgia, including the Monticello area, and is considered a good choice for beginners. If planted in full sun with well-drained soil and watered regularly during the first year, most home gardeners have a very good chance of successfully growing and maintaining this tree.

Q: Can the tree be planted in a partially sunny area?

1 Answer
  • DeGroot
A: Dear Hassie, Methley plum tree requires 6+ hours of full sun a day for the most productive fruiting and health of the tree. If it does not receive full sun each day, it may be less productive. If you have additional questions, please feel free to reach out to us at sales@degroot-inc.com or (269)468-6714. Thank you, DeGroot Inc.

Q: Can I plant the methley plum in a bucket or pot and transplant to soil when it gets warmer out?

1 Answer
  • DeGroot
A: Thank you for your question about your Methley Plum Tree. It can be planted in a pot or bucket until you're ready to transplant in the ground. Please be sure there is proper drainage in the pot or bucket. If your plum tree is still dormant (without foliage), it may be planted in the ground now (or when your soil becomes workable). If you have additional questions, we encourage you to contact us at (269) 468-6714 or sales@degroot-inc.com so we may assist you. Thank you, DeGroot Inc.

Dear Lacey, thank you for sharing your experience. At the time of purchase, your Methley Plum tree should have moist firm roots. After planting, this dormant bareroot fruit tree may take up to 8 weeks to break dormancy. We do guarantee our product as stated on our Guarantee that is shown on the package. In the event your plant does not break dormancy or the roots were not in excellent condition at the time of purchase, we encourage you to reach out to us with a copy of your sales receipt so we may assist you with our Guarantee To Grow process at (269) 468-6714 or sales@degroot-inc.com. Dear Charles, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We understand your concern about your Methley Plum tree not showing signs of growth, and we’re here to support you. Our bare root plants are shipped in a dormant state to allow for earlier planting. During dormancy, it’s common to notice signs such as dry or brittle stems, minimal to no foliage, or crinkled, brown leaves. Fruiting trees like the Methley Plum can take up to 8 weeks to break dormancy and begin showing new growth. To check the tree’s viability, we recommend performing a scratch test. Gently scratch the stem near the base—if you see green tissue beneath the surface, the tree is still alive and should begin establishing itself soon. If the tissue is brown, please don’t hesitate to contact us at sales@degroot-inc.com or 269-468-6714 so we can assist you further, including offering a refund if applicable. Thank you, DeGroot Inc. Dear Thad, Thank you for reaching out regarding your recent purchase. We understand your concern about the appearance of your Methley Plum Tree and are happy to help. At this time, the tree is in its natural dormancy period, which is essential for its health. During dormancy, it is normal for the tree to have little to no foliage or show crinkled leaves as it conserves energy for the upcoming growing season. Once planted, your tree should begin to break dormancy and show signs of growth within 6-8 weeks. A simple way to check its viability is by performing a scratch test: gently scratch the stem near the base. If you see green tissue beneath, your tree is healthy and should establish itself over time. If the tissue is brown instead of green, please reach out to us at 269-468-6714 or sales@degroot-inc.com so we can further assist you with a refund. We appreciate your business and look forward to helping you have a successful gardening season. DeGroot Inc. DeGroot

Not a high survival rate.

I purchased a Florida King peach, a Sam Houston Peach, and 2 Methley Plums. surviving is a Methley plum, but only because it sprouted a small branch well below the others which all dried up and died, and I watered it daily. Also the Florida King is surviving but still hasn't budded. Not too pleased, got them early and the first 2 I bought were dried out and never budded. 50/50 is not really a good ratio for survival. I also got a June Gold peach online same size bare root and it is thriving, was from a different grower.
