Versatile and well made

I admit, I'm not using this axe how it's meant to be used. I won't be felling any trees with it or cutting up any fallen logs. However, that doesn't mean I'm not very impressed with it. It's not a splitting axe - the bit is too narrow to drive a large log apart as efficiently as a wider splitting axe would do. It's also not a convenient hatchet, as the full-length handle is pretty big to be carried around easily. I decided to use it as a splitting axe and a hatchet, and really enjoyed it. The handle is beautiful and well shaped, and I never had to worry about it slipping out of my hands. It swung easily with a great balance, and did a good job at splitting the easier, straighter logs. The 5lb head is a bit lighter than my splitting axe, which reduces the effort needed to swing it. Even though the handle is much too long for your typical hatchet use, it is still a joy to use. Holding the handle closer to the head gave me great control over the bit and allowed me to cut up some kindling with ease. I could let the heavier head do the work instead of trying to quickly swing a smaller lighter hatchet, which meant my fingers were safe from my amateur aim 😄 I have no doubt that however you choose to swing this axe, you'll enjoy it and get some good work done with it.

Sharp and comfortable to swing.

I recently had a dead American Elm cut down and the whole tree was left behind. I was planning to just cut it up with a chainsaw, but figured I could use the exercise and got an axe instead. I like that Crescent includes a simple plastic sheath to cover the cutting edge making the axe safe while transporting or not in use. The factory edge is very sharp and I was able to chop several inches into the log in only a few minutes. The hickory handle is very nice and does not send vibration through my hands and arms. Initially I thought the finish on the handle would be slippery, but my hands gripped nicely, granted my hands are pretty callused. Even though the axe is advertised as a chopping axe I also took a swing at splitting a round and it seems to split well. I can only give the axe four stars because I did notice that the head started to loosen a little bit after a few swings, but I don't think it is at risk of coming off. Overall I think that the axe is well built and handles well.

Well balanced

Got this for my yearly camping trip but could not resist the opportunity to try it out at work. Found a dead tree at one of my sites and had to try it out. Found that the axe I had selected is well balanced and swings easily and accurately. Looking forward to using more in the future

Good axe with a great handle

A couple of months ago I started clearing a small space for my kids’ swingset. I had a stump that I needed to remove. I finally got this axe to help me cut the roots. I had spent weeks working on this stump and in about 30 minutes with this axe I had it out of the ground. The axe is a good axe. It takes good bites out of the wood. It wasn’t terribly sharp when I got it but that’s to be expected. The weight is good and I love the feel of the handle. That handle has a great shape and I don’t feel like it’s going to slip out of my hand. The handle guard near the axe head is a really nice feature. The guard saved the handle a few times when I missed the roots. It seems like it will hold up better than just a traditional wood handle. The only problem with the handle that I have is that the grain is not oriented in the proper way. The head cover is also nice to have. The elastic on it doesn’t seem the most robust but I still like that it’s included. Other than that, I really like the axe and am glad that I have it for the odd jobs around the house. If you’re looking for a new axe, this one won’t disappoint.
