American Made: American Frustrated

The guide clearly says two people. I’m sure they would help but this has been a huge pain. Probably my own fault with unrealistic expectations. I’ve recorded my whole experience and I encourage you to as well. The thing is heavy and that’s good! The quality though is lacking. The base feet are actually nice. I read reviews about the issues and I thought I was in the clear, but then I started putting together the rafters and it was just bad. Scratches in the box, patches of paint missing and I’m fairly confident that my extension to 9 feet was used and repackaged because those were even worse shape. But my biggest grievance is definitely the poor welds and quality control on the rafters. Again it’s just me maybe two would make it easier. But the first one took me near two hours. Why? Because I felt I was fighting the unit each way. I would put parts together realize the ends weren’t aligning, then unscrew parts, and then redo them just to end up in the same position. Eventually I got it all square. Hooray. Next day, I tackle another one. Same issue. Thought I had learned some from the first by trying a new order of operations. Guess not. Then I identified that the adjustable pieces always came down to the two end pieces of the triangle. The two corners I mean. From that on the third one that’s what I focused on was getting that third piece together. But it was still misaligned, and I had to take the middle part apart, and that way I could get the bottom bar to actually align with the holes on the two corner pieces. But then I would insert the middle column and it looks crooked. I thought I was crazy, but I tried my best in many ways to get that column to a line and I ended up getting a mallet and probably avoided my warranty, but I took a few few swings at it to get it aligned and it shaped up and I slotted it and then it looked perfect. On the fourth one, I figured out I had a good plan. I would build the outside frame with a triangle and then do the center column piece last and sure enough it was the same situation. Without the mallet, I could bend that centerpiece to within about half an inch from going over and connecting with the bottom piece, but it would not do it so I had to take the mallet to it again. And eventually it did. I did the same thing with the fifth one and then when it gave too easily, I realized what I had done, which was that the welds were giving out and broke. So I had to inspect the previous two. And oddly enough, the first one had only one side of the welds broken. The other side was fine. But the second one or the fourth out of five, did not break. The welds were still intact. And I say again, it was probably me and Mabee with two other people things would have gotten smoothly, but I’m also pretty confident that the joint is misaligned by like half an inch. And so because they welded it half an inch off center it was more on the angle side and that angle is what kicked out the center from aligning with the bottom base. And so throughout all of this, I had to go and find a welder and to take a part of those pieces and have them welded back together. It was extremely frustrating because even by myself I had such a nice rhythm that if they were aligned properly, I would have each after done in about 40 minutes instead of the two hours. I was averaging trying to fight The misalignment. It’s still not complete. I’m worried about what else I will find. We will see.

No, I do not recommend this product.

More Realistic Models

Eventually it would be cool to see the actual object constructed. I think at this point with the help of AI, the model could be more realistic.

Terrible welds

This carport was easy to put up until……we got to the center supports of the rafters!!!! What a nightmare. The welds were so off center they wouldn’t even line up. Every single weld in the center was off! We put the first one together on the ground and fought it so bad that we decided to try another way. Once arches were up we saw the terrible weld job! As mich as these things cost, you would think this would never have passed quality control. We have already got the frame up and unfortunately we cannot attach the rafters the way they are supposed to be so we are doing what we can with what we have. Two days of leveling ground and building arches and it is too big to rip down and send back. Do not buy this carport unless you can inspect every single peek to make sure the welds aren’t off center or angled so bad and nothing lines up.
