Tried it without one...LOL
Man let me tell you... I bought 1000 ft roll of 12G and used it a few years back. I made some jig that helped somewhat. But this time, I fenced another area a few days back without one. Don't know what I was thinking. OMG, I had the largest mess of wire sprawled out on the pasture. It was comical having to pull each strand out of the mess over and over to get a small garden enclosed. After its tangled its pretty much over. Wish I had a picture so you could laugh with me. This is a must!

Could be a lot better with a few modifications
8 years ago
Bought this a couple of years ago and used it for several fencing projects. The wingnuts never stayed tight and stripped out after the first couple uses...I replaced them with galvanized bolts and locking washers with no problems since. The soil needs to be very firm...we live on sand so once your start pulling out the wire, the whole thing leans over immediately and hits the ground because the spike only goes in the ground for about 6" or so. The area also needs to be very flat as it sits very low to the ground. I built a wood cross-shaped stand with a single 2x4x8 for this to raise it up and stabilize it for any soil condition. Other than that, there's been no rust or bends in the product, but it's only usable on flat hard soil conditions the way it comes.

Cheap and does the minimum job
Cheap and works decent if you are easy with it. The weak spot is the L shaped threaded pieces that hold the wire onto the spool, they are inferior Chinese metal amd if you just replace them it will work much better.
I didnt stick it in the ground I drilled a hole in a piece of wood and used vertically.
Yes, I recommend this product.

Easy peasy
Strongly recommend using one of these for high tensile electric fencing. We drilled a hole in a 2x4 ratchet strapped the 2x4 to lawn mower trailer and slowly walked the wire down the line. This fence was 100x easier than our field fencing.

Not a dependable tool
I purchased this to replace the jenny I purchased about 30 years ago - which got significant use.
The spinning jenny was substandard in that it was lightweight. Wire was easily dislodged from spool while in transit. I would not recommend this jenny to anyone doing a significant amount of fence work
