A: Michael, we do not recommend this, once gas is inside the can to do that, we suggested adding the dust cap on the top and keep the spout screwed on the can for use.

Q: Does anyone sell gas cans that are not spill proof anymore? Just a cap on the end ? I want old type. These new ones are a pain.

1 Answer
  • A: Hi, Thanks for reaching out. We do not carry any of the older style gas cans. The primary goal of the EPA redesign was to reduce the leakage of gasoline fumes into the air. The older gas can spouts were a flexible straw design, and this was incredibly easy to pour from. They may have also been leading to the evaporation of gas into the atmosphere. Therefore 99% of what is on the market now, are the newer style cans.

REPLACE THE SPOUT

All of the bad reviews have one thing in common: the spout. Unfortunately, in 2007, the government mandated these self-sealing spouts on all new gas cans. Thankfully, you can still buy good old fashioned spouts online to replace them.

Horrible design

Why couldn't we just leave gas cans alone and let idiots kill themselves? This has to be the worst design of a gas can the world has ever seen...and why? Because of lawyers. You know what, I'd rather sign a waiver and buy an old school gas can than have to deal with some idiotic design that doesn't work.

Nuisance to Fill

The good news is that it doesn't leak. The bad news is that it's a pain in the neck to fill. Because of the screen in the opening, gas from a pump splashes up and causes the pump to shut off. You have to hold the can at a particular angle and pump sloooooooowly.
