Q&As

1 - 9 of 9 Questions

Q: How long do you have to freeze it in order to apply?

1 Answer
  • A: For optimal use, you should freeze the Tough1 Ice Horse Boot for a minimum of 5 hours before application. The gel packs are designed to remain soft and flexible even when frozen, allowing the boot to conform to the horse's leg for effective cooling and compression. Storing the boot flat in the freezer between uses is recommended for best results.

Q: Is the ice in the form of a gel in beads? Is it easily adaptable to the shape of the horse's leg? I am not looking for the kind of ice pack that is rock hard as I need to wrap it around my horse's leg. Thank you.

  • A: I used two of these boots when my mare injured her suspensory ligament in the right hind. There is a gel in each one of the quilted sections which don't actually freeze into hard ice, but keep cold for at least 30-45 minutes. The cold boots decreased her pain and swelling very well, although she wasn't all that happy to wear them. The velcro can be tricky, but hold the boots in place nicely. Easily fit in the freezer.

Don't waste money; use my homemade hack instead

I had high hopes for this product. It really needs GEL inserts in each rectangle, and not inflexible hard material. It does not conform that well nor really hold the cold against the leg. It's more leg-adjacent. The velcro straps fasten onto themselves, and as such are way too long and end up in the shavings, collecting everything on the floor, while you try to wrap them. And the boot material is slippery, which may be the worst part. Material that is rougher and doesn't slide down the leg would be smart. Save your money. Get a 6x8 or 8x10 type human ice pack with GEL inside it, the flexible kind in the thick blue plastic that isn't slick and has a seam around the edges. (Don't buy the cheap style that is slippery white plastic and thin; those puncture easily and ooze out gel.) Take a polo wrap and your frozen gel pack, wrap the pack around the limb, polo wrap it snugly, and ice for 15 minutes. When you take it off, the pack will be melting/warmer and the leg will feel cooler. That's success.

No, I do not recommend this product.
