Q&As

1 - 2 of 2 Questions

Q: Can this be applied to extremely dry pressure treated wood?

1 Answer
  • A: Yes, Before you apply Seal-Once Marine Grade , you must clean and brighten your wood using Seal-Once Multi-Surface Cleaner. Apply the cleaner as directed. Let it sit on the surface for around 20 minutes. During this time, agitate it with a scrub brush. The scrub brush will help immensely. Do not allow the cleaner to dry on the surface. Keep it wet. Rinse off the cleaner with a power washer. Keep the wand about a foot away from the surface. You don't want to scar the wood. Your goal for cleaning is to make the deck floor look like it did when it was brand new. Complete raw wood. After it is clean and dry, (2 days), you can apply the required 2 coats of Seal-Once Marine Grade with a brush. Apply 2 thin coats. If you spray or roll, you must immediately brush the area using a brush. It is called back brushing. Do not spray or roll and leave it, you must back brush it immediately after spraying or rolling, using a brush. Brushing is very important. You begin at the end of two boards. You will brush to the other end of the same two boards. Now apply a second coat to the same 2 boards. Apply the second coat within 5-10 minutes of the first coat. The second coat must be applied while the first coat is still wet. (Wet on wet application). I live in Dallas. I have timed the first coat drying in 5 minutes. Push the product into the wood with the brush. Spread it out evenly and not too heavy. More is not always better. Do not allow it to puddle. Wipe off any excess with a rag. This way, you never walk over wet product. Three things to avoid during application: 1. Waiting too long between the first and second coat. 2. Do not apply too heavy. (Apply thin coats). 3. When applying the second coat, if you can't brush the product into the wood because there is too much, don't leave it on the surface thinking it will magically soak into the wood. The wood is already saturated. Wipe the excess off with a rag. If you don't wipe off the excess, it will leave un-even shiny sticky spots that will attract dirt and mildew.

Q: Does it perform well on outdoor furniture. Seats and arms on Adirondack chairs.

1 Answer
  • A: Seal-Once Marine Grade is made for softwoods like pine, redwood. For hardwoods like teak, oak, IPE, acacia, you need to use Seal-Once "Clear Waterproofer". Most furniture sets come already stained or sealed from the factory. You cannot use Seal-Once if it is already stained or sealed. Typically outdoor furniture, will look like it needs to be cleaned and coated annually, including Seal-Once. Seal-Once products are exterior penetrating, non-film forming water proofers. No film and little to no sheen. When applied and dry your wood will look like you did nothing to it. Your chairs will still look like raw un-finished wood. Seal-Once is made to repel occasional rain water. It will not repel, body oil, food grease, cooking oil, fruit juices, alcohol, or strong cleaning agents. Seal-Once products must be applied to raw bare wood. You must completely strip off any current product. If any remains hidden deep in the pores of the wood, Seal-Once will not penetrate, leaving un-even shiny sticky spots.

It’s nice!

We used this up north at our cabin on the lake. It worked so well! We just redid our stairs after the winter and this stain was very easy to go on and covered a very wide range of the steps! It went on easy and was not hard to prepare and did not take too many tools to do.

Best Dock Paint

Needed to extend the life of an old dock until it can eventually be replaced. Used 6 gallons of this sealer in Coastal Gray to seal the old pressure washed boards. Very pleased with the outcome, ease of use and quality of the product. Seals so water beads up and is not absorbed. Prevents splinters too.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Transparent wood stain

This wood stain gives a nice warm cedar tone but is still transparent to show the natural wood grain. It goes on smoothly and is easy to apply. It’s made for outdoor conditions so I feel good that it will hold up over time. Overall it’s done what I needed.

Rich wood stain for patio cover

I love how this wood stain made our tired old patio cover look! You can see that it really revitalized the exterior and will hopefully help it last longer. Unfortunately I really do not like the cheap plastic can that it comes in. The handle popped out of the plastic tab on the side and it spilled all over the box in transit. Would be a perfect score if the packaging were better.
