Q&As

Q: Can or should I use primer first before painting with this paint?

1 Answer
  • A: Howdy neighbor! No, you do not need to use a primer, nor should you use one, before applying Gardner-Gibson Black Beauty Asphalt Fence Paint. This heavy-duty asphalt coating is specially formulated to act as its own self-priming sealant, meaning it is designed to penetrate deeply and bond directly to raw, unpainted surfaces like rough-sawn wood, metal, or concrete.

Q: Can it be sprayed?

1 Answer
  • A: Yes, Gardner-Gibson 3.6 qt. Black Beauty Asphalt Fence Paint can be sprayed, but it requires a professional-grade airless sprayer to handle its heavy thickness. Standard homeowner cup guns, handheld DIY paint sprayers, or pneumatic hand-pump lawn sprayers are not powerful enough and will instantly clog.

Q: Can you paint another color over it

1 Answer
  • A: Howdy neighbor! You cannot paint another color directly over Gardner-Gibson Black Beauty Asphalt Fence Paint because the petroleum oils in the asphalt will bleed through and ruin your new topcoat.

Most Helpful Favorable Review

I can't believe how much better my fence looks.

If you want to know what this paint looks like on a fence google "Kentucky horse fences" . Rather than true black, the color is a matte dark graphite and it really adds a touch of class to a fence. Notes: Dont worry if you open the can and the paint is as thick as pudding. That is the way it should be. Buy enough brushes and roller covers that you can just throw them away after one use. Clean-up is a bear!

See my review on the 5 gallon size of this product.  Won't last more than a year and not sure now that normal paint will go over it.

Spreadin Asphalt

Spreads easily, covers with 1 coat, tough to get off skin (a good sign). In south Texas it is hot! The paint gets thick when the temps are high. Seems to spread best at80-85 (winter here). we had a lot of early early morning painting. All in all it is the best to the fence paints that i have used.
