With this gardening product, you can expect more blooms for more color*. This container mix works best with outdoor container plants, including your favorite flowers, annuals, perennials, vegetables, and shrubs. To apply, select a pot with a drain hole. Fill the pot about 1/3 full with potting soil. Loosen the root ball of your plant and place it in the pot. Add more potting mix and press lightly to level. Water your plant and let it drain. Fungal mold spores are a natural part of soils. Our soil products are not sterilized and may contain microorganism including fungus as they are natural products. Sterilization would kill off the beneficial microorganisms that make soil alive. In fact, fungus and mold has been scientifically proven to improve the growth of plants by releasing nutrients from the organic material that growing media are typically lacking.
The fungus and mold only becomes a problem if there is an overgrowth. Overgrowth occurs when the soil mulch is too wet. For soil that has already been used, allow the plants to dry out a bit between waterings. It will not hurt the plant to allow the soil to dry between waterings but will typically eliminate any mold fungus growth which needs the extra moisture. Keep in mind that mold and fungus on growing media will go away with sunlight and air circulation.
While we do not sterilize the soil, it is composted to kill any harmful insects and microbes. However, soils may become infested with insects while in transit, storage or waiting for sale. These insects do not feed upon plants, but lay their eggs in soil that contains organic matter. The larvae usually do not damage plants but, when present in large numbers, may feed on the roots of some plants.
A couple good steps you can take to get rid or prevent fungus gnats are:
- Let the soil dry out. Dry soil helps kill the larvae. It's especially important to drain the saucers of excess water. Anything left after an hour should be poured out.
- Apply at least 1/2 inch of sand on top of th
