If the lawn isn't receiving at least an inch of water per week, then the lawn will not green up as fast. Thatch over 1/2" thick prevents the nutrients from getting to the plant roots. When mowing, be sure mower blades are sharp and do not remove more than 1/3 of the grass blade at a time. Cutting more than that or having dull blades rips the grass causing browning of tips.
