This 100 percent Canadian Sphagnum peat moss, the best all-purpose natural soil conditioner, can slightly lower the pH of alkaline soils and is ideal for improving water retention and aeration in garden soil. The 2.2 cu. ft. compressed-volume bag expands when opened to yield up to 4.4 cu. ft.

Highly recommend you try this brand over Premier

Normally I buy the Premere brand packaged by Promix. I absolutely hate using the Premier brand sold by the other big stores. It is so dry that it's almost impossible to hydrate well without a lot of manual work and time. But this Sungro Black and gold was the complete opposite. Even though it does not contain a wetting agent, my 2 bags it does came partially hydrated in the bag. Now some have told me that this was simply because rain water got into it as the bags sat in the rain in the TS parking lot, but I don't believe this is the case. The bags on this Sungro peat are about 2x the thickness as the bags Promix uses on the Premier brand (which is nice as it does not rip easily) and the Sungro Black Gold bags do not have any ventilation holes or any other holes or rips for tha tmatter. This leads me to believe it is intentionally partially hydrated from the Sungro packaging plant, which makes it super easy to hydrate the rest of the way. You put it in a bucket and spray water on it an dit immediately starts to absorb the water, unlick the Premier brand where 99% of the water falls off the top, too the sides and right to the bottom of the peat. It's hard to say if it's always like this since this is my first time using this brand of peat moss, but I would highly recommend you at least try it once before you go for the Premier brand the next time you need peat. Worst case scenario is that you just get a bag of super dry peat like you would with the other brand anyhow. The quality of the peat is also very good and I believe a little finer than the Premier brand (I realize this may be a downside depending on what you need it for). I also found that it is screened better with much less stems/twigs and no hard clumps. And to top it off, it's actually a little cheaper per cu.ft. than the Premier brand from the other big stores (at least it is in my area but YMMV as these products do vary in price from region to region). But if Sungro Black Gold Peat is intentionally partially hydraded from the packing plant, then I would gladly pay a little more for it just for the time, labor and aggravation it saves me.

Premier Peat Moss Green and White Bag=Terrible

This picture is very misleading. Both stores that I shop don’t carry this black gold peat moss(which was very good) anymore. Both have the green and white bag premier canadian peat moss. I was using it for a custom seed starting mix. First the green and white bag has ALOT of twigs in it( guessing from my screenings at least double from the other peat moss. Second the peat moss was very powdery which I thought well maybe this was from the end of a run or something. So i went forward with added my ingredients together and added water after everything was mixed. It seemed ok. Third even though i added water to the mix it would normally take 5 seconds for water to drain after planting seeds and watering them in the cups. Not the case with this stuff. Even though it was moist it was extremely hydrophobic and the water just stayed puddled on top of the seed cup. I tried adding more perlite to correct this with zero improvement. So NO I wouldn’t recommend this Premier green and white bag peat moss at all especially for making your own mixes. BTW it was the same with two different bags of this stuff.
