Q: Is this a northern red oak tree?

  • A: Hi. This is a good question. The red oaks that ship to the north are Northern Red Oaks. They have a hardiness zone of 3-8, and will produce the classic dark red foliage in the fall.

Q: How tall are the trees when they arrive?

1 Answer
  • A: The Red Oak tree #5 will arrive between 4-6 feet; depending on time of year when they are ordered. They are still growing in spring/early summer months so that means they will arrive taller (5-6 feet) in the late summer/fall.

Q: Are these Shumarte? Red Oak? We have to replace our shade row of 3 30 year olds due to lightening damage and ensuing bug damage to trees. We like the fact that the Shumarte red oak hangs on to its leaves until the windy spring! Very few mows to mulch!

1 Answer
  • A: Our Red Oak is not a Shumard Oak. It is just a classic Red Oak tree. There are subtle differences between their leaves. While both have leaves with multiple, pointy lobes, the Shumard Oak has deep sinuses extending nearly to the center of the leaf, while the Red Oak has shallow, more plentiful lobes. Shumard Oak leaves have a leathery texture while Red Oak leaves are shinier. Other differences include that Shumard Oaks tolerate damp soil conditions, but Red Oaks require good drainage to grow. The acorn differences are very slight. Shumard Oaks have a grayish bark, smooth on younger trees but gradually develops the furrows and ridges with age. Red Oaks tend to have a darker gray to almost black color, with age deeper fissures and ridges will occur. I cannot advise when the leaves will fall, as this is very dependent on location, soil and other environmental factors.

Red oak native

Because this tree was shipped it came in a box to protect the tree. This was not a bare root but it was a 6’ 4gal potted tree. The leaves are brown because it was boxed and this time of year red oaks will lose their leaves. The tree came in great condition and I am very happy to add it to my yard.
