The Pirtle Nursery 6 gal. Pecan Tree is useful as a shade tree in your landscape, and it provides an edible fruit nut. Large limbs grow up from the trunk of this easy-to-grow tree in a distinctive upright spreading fashion. Pecan trees are fast growing and tolerant of many soil types. Nuts are enclosed in a thick leathery husk that are harvested in the fall months. Specific varieties are determined by availability, including but not limited to Pawnee, Native, Kanza, Choctaw and Desirable. A pecan tree will not grow outside of hardiness zones 6-10.

  • Includes 1 pecan tree in a #6 pot (6.06 gal.) and detailed planting instructions
  • Harvest nuts in fall
  • Best grown in USDA hardiness zones 6-10
  • Easy-to-plant pecan trees require a cross-pollinator and different varieties have different pollen receptive/shedding time frames
  • Grows to 75-100 ft. H
  • Pirtle Nursery's pecan tree is tolerant of many soils; plant in full sun with well-drained soil, space 40-70 ft. apart
  • Useful as a shade tree in your landscape and provides edible fruit nut

Q&As

Q: Do you have Desirable pecan trees in the 6 gal. available in Tyler, TX?

1 Answer
  • A: Hello. I would suggest calling the Tractor Supply in Tyler, TX and surrounding stores to see what they have on hand of specific pecan varieties. If they do not please discuss arrangements with your local Tractor Supply to work with vendor about getting desired varieties sent with their next store shipment. This typically occurs in the spring and fall. Hope this helps!

Q: What zone is 6-10 for pollination pecan paper chel and a good pollination

1 Answer
  • A: Hi. There is a lot within that question, so let us break it down. First a paper shell pecan is a type of pecan known for its thin, easily cracked shell. Many people prefer this type as they find it easier to crack by hand. Second, "zone 6-10" refers to the USDA hardiness zone map. Which you can look up your physical location here: https://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/ Finally, we would need to know your variety of pecan tree (i.e. Kanza, Oconee, Pawnee...there are so many of them) to narrow down a good pollinator. Please call Pirtle Nursery at 800-833-9493 for direct assistance to find pollinator for your pecan variety. Thank you for the wonderful question!

Q: Do you need two different varieties of pecan trees for cross pollination or can you have two of the same variety?

Needed Type 2 Trees

Trees look good but I went to 2 stores (Livingston, Shepherd) and they only had Type 1 trees. I was shopping for Type 2 trees to increase pollination in the orchard. Wish this website would list the names/types of pecan trees available. Thanks
