Q: Does the door lock from both ends to keep out smart animals, like racoons? My last pet door with keyed entry only kept the racoons from pushing the door in, but not from pulling the door outward with their claws and getting in that way.

Toggle to big and bite able!

I bought this via Woolworths Everyday rewards. It’s a good door. The problem we have is the toggle. It’s too big and no matter where we attach it, (back of neck on his harness even) our mini dachshund will get it and chew the battery end off. We have put duct tape around it to try and secure it but without fail, he will get it off. I am now constantly hovering, afraid he will swallow the battery. I wish we had gone with one that can detect his microchip instead of the toggle.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Do not recommend

I have had this since 2017 and my only complaint until recently was how fast the batteries drained. About once a month to be specific. Over the last couple years I have had to “fight” with the door to get it to fully lock. I make sure I clean the opening so no debris is there. Occasionally it will close right away. But more often the result is that I have to sit in front of it and cycle to the lock setting multiple times. Last night it too me multiple attempts trying to get it to lock. As of a month ago, the motor does not sound good either. I am looking to replace this and I will never recommend an electronic door. Too many pieces to break. Sometimes old school is best.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Energy Draining and Expensive to Maintain

We have had two of these pet doors and about to need a replacement because it is broken beyond repair. Aside from that this door is a cool concept, but the sensors are hard to keep up with as they screw off and get lost. Keeping up with batteries is super expensive. The door takes two D batteries and they last less than a month. We don't even use the system as it's designed. If your dog is one that goes hard through a door, this is not the door for you. One of our dog tears through when coming inside which has caused the plastic on the door and the insert to break. If the door does not lock them there are gaps in all sides. This is insanely draining on utility bills, especially in extreme heat or cold. I would not recommend this door to anyone really.

No, I do not recommend this product.

We're so sorry to hear that your door has been damaged, Ariel! We do always recommend working with your dogs to use the door at a walk, as though this door is sturdy, repeated use at high speeds/with force will cause damage over time. Many customers have worked with their dogs on this by using obstacles in front of the door to force them to slow and approach the door differently, then rewarding that behavior with praise and high value treats, etc. The battery life you have described is very unusual, as though battery life does vary with use, the four D batteries used in this door typically last around three months. We would love the chance to speak with you directly, both to see how we can help with your damaged door and to troubleshoot the battery issues you've experienced. Please have a clear picture or screenshot of your order record or receipt and be with your door, then reach out to our live support team here- https://support.petsafe.net/contact-us/ Our phone hours are Monday through Friday 8 A.M.- 7 P.M. EST, and our chat hours are Monday through Friday 9 A.M. – 9 P.M. EST and Saturday 9 A.M. – 6 P.M. EST.

5 years and still going strong

Really surprised by the mixed reviews. I originally bought mine in 2021, and it has held up longer than the actual old exterior door it was installed into. The company was nice enough to send me a new cutting template so that I could transfer the pet door to my new exterior door. I originally bought it for my very large and strong Bouviers that would run into the door constantly. The hinges and hardware are all quite strong so I could only assume the reviews are for an older model of this product. I originally chose this product because I do not want the cats outside. It has done a great job at only allowing the dogs to enter or exit the house. There is very minimal draft in between the door and the flap. I do not notice any change in temp near the door so I am comfortable using it in my state of NC where we have very humid and hot summers. I also prefer the clean look and translucent flap which does allow some light in while still providing some privacy.

Yes, I recommend this product.
