Q: why do you make these look like the older design and have an inferior product

The depth of the graphite is a faint and very light gray, bordering on being illegible and nearly invisible. It is NOT the deep, defined, dark gray it once was. While they are cheaper than other mechanical pencils I won't be buying them again. I am just throwing away money when I do so. If anyone an recommend a better option, please do so. Thank you!

Q: The change in design for the new version of a great product has resulted in an inferior product. The lead breaks easily and the image is too light. The old design was superior. Why was it changed?

The Paper Mate SharpWriter Mechanical Pencil was updated to improve affordability and reduce material waste while maintaining its disposable, twist-feed design. The core function—delivering a quick, budget-friendly writing option—remains the same, but the feel has changed. If you prefer a more durable mechanical pencil with darker output and stronger lead, Paper Mate’s Clearpoint line or other 0.7 mm pencils with stronger grip and lead support might be a better match. Q: How do you reload a new lead into the C1 0.5mm mechanical pencil? I can't see any bits that unscrew to put new lead into internal tube

It uses a spring-like tip that advances the lead when you twist the eraser end, but it can’t be opened or reloaded with new lead. If you're asking about reloading the C1 0.5mm mechanical pencil, that’s a different model—not the SharpWriter. For typical refillable 0.5mm pencils, here’s how you usually reload them: 1. Pull off the eraser or top cap. 2. Drop 1–3 new 0.5mm HB leads into the inner tube. 3. Replace the eraser or cap. 4. Click to advance the lead. If your specific C1 model has a unique mechanism and you're not seeing how it opens, feel free to share the photo—some minimalist designs hide the refill point in unusual ways. For further assistance, please call us at 1-800-346-3278. Our support team is available Monday through Friday, from 9 am to 5 pm Eastern Time. Alternatively, you can reach us through our contact form: https://www.papermate.com/support/contact-us Have a wonderful day! Kind regards, —Paper Mate Consumer Care

Q: Please. I’m begging you. Bring back the old version of the pencil. The lead is worse. The eraser is worse. I have to switch to the Bic until the old ones are back. I’ve been using them for over 30 years. Will you please bring it back?

Q: New pencil are NOT THE SAME. They do not write like they used to. Lead is not as dark. I have to write over what I write to make it show up.

Q: Why do you still have the original pencils pictured as what you’re selling? That is false advertisement.

Q: Are you considering bringing back the original design and quality of this pencil? I have been buying Papermate pencils for decades and will not spend my money on these cheap dupes. Also, 2nd the question regarding reviews being closed. Interesting

Q: Why are we no longer able to review this product? There are obviously many of us who are dissatisfied with the intentional changes to this iconic product (lighter yellow color, less durable eraser, lead hardness, etc.), and our opinions should be heard.

Great Pencils

It's so nice to have a pencil that are always sharp. These are nice and the eraser works well and doesn't leave marks on the paper like other erasers do. It's a value size box and now we don't have deal with sharpening a pencil, oversharpening it, it breaking, and then doing it again. It's always sharp - yay!

Yes, I recommend this product.

Best pencils!

These sharp writer pencils are my go to writing utensil. They write like a dream and i love that I don’t need to sharpen them. They come in handy for my high school son every year. I always buy him a pack! I am an accountant and also love to use them. No worrying about sharpening them and the mess that comes with it. I highly recommend these for any job! The eraser always lasts past the time of the lead too. The lead lasts so much longer than other brands that I have purchased. I don’t have trouble with smudging at all with these.

Yes, I recommend this product.
