Panacur Equine Paste 10% is used for the treatment and control of large strongyles (Strongylus edentatus, S. equinus, S. vulgaris), encysted early 3rd stage (hypobiotic), late 3rd stage, and 4th stage cyathostome larvae, small strongyles, pinworms (Oxyuris equi), and ascarids (Parascaris equorum). It also helps control arteritis caused by the 4th stage larvae of Strongylus vulgaris in horses. Repeat use may be needed to avoid reinfestation. Comes in a 25g tube of equine dewormer. How it Works

It is suggested that fenbendazole's mechanism works by stopping the parasite's ability to metabolize, therefore inhibiting its ability to maintain its energy production.

Special Precautions

Be cautious of using in conjunction with trichlorfon. Be sure to review manufacturer's descriptions before administering alongside trichlorfon.

Overdose Information

Immediately contact your closest emergency animal hospital or vet.

Q: Can you explain this in basic english for me? How many CCs per pound?

1 Answer
  • Merck Animal Health Brand
A: Thanks for your question on SAFE-GUARD 25gm dosing. If you have an adult horse and are looking at deworming for large strongyles, small strongyles and pinworms, then the dosage is administered orally at a rate of 2.3 mg/lb (5 mg/kg). One 25-gram syringe will deworm a 1,100 lb horse. If you have a foal or weanling (less than 18 months of age), then ascarids can be a common problem, the recommended dose is 4.6 mg/lb (10 mg/kg); one 25-gram syringe will deworm a 550 lb horse. However, if you are wanting to control encysted early third stage (hypobiotic), late third stage and fourth stage cyathostome larvae, and fourth stage larvae of Strongylus vulgaris, the recommended dose is 4.6 mg/lb (10 mg/kg) daily for 5 consecutive days; administer one 25-gram syringe for each 550 lbs body weight per day. We also recommend consulting with your veterinarian in the diagnosis, treatment and control of parasitism. Thank you, Merck Animal Health Retail

Recommended by my vet

This dewormer was recommended by my veterinarian to use on a horse when you first get it. The reason was that if the horse has a high worm load, if you give another product with ivermectin, that there can be such a large worm die off that it causes an impaction colic. This dewormer works more gradually over a few days and you avoid that complication of worming. My horse tolerated it very well and is already gaining weight.

Great dewormer program!

I’ve used the Panacur PowerPac as part of my horse’s regular deworming program for years. The five-day format is straightforward and easy to follow, with each tube clearly portioned so there’s no guesswork involved. Administration was simple—my horse accepted the paste without much fuss. What I like most about the PowerPac is that it’s designed to address a broad range of internal parasites while being gentle enough for repeated use when recommended. It feels like a thoughtful, well-established product rather than a harsh, one-size-fits-all solution. Overall, Panacur PowerPac is a solid choice if you’re looking for a trusted, easy-to-use dewormer that fits smoothly into a responsible parasite control program!

Yes, I recommend this product.
