- A: External thermostats are not recommended. There is a cool down cycle that runs after the unit is turned off. An external thermostat will cut the power to the heater and the cool-down cycle will not run which can cause damage over time. The MH-80-OFR is a radiant heater which heats objects in a space much like a bonfire or the sun. It does not directly heat the air, which means a thermostat isn't practical with this heater.4 years agoHelpful?
