Ivermectin is a macrocyclic lactone endectocide. It selectively binds to glutamate-gated chloride channels in invertebrate nerve and muscle cells of invertebrates, leading to paralysis and death of target parasites. Mammals are protected, due to the absence of these channels and the limited ability of ivermectin to cross the blood-brain barrier.

Ivermectin
Dosage Instructions/Directions For cattle: Administer subcutaneously only, in front of the shoulder. Recommended dose: 1 mL per 110 lbs. (50 kg) body weight (equivalent to 200 mcg/kg). Use a 16-gauge, 1/2-3/4-inch sterile needle. Divide doses greater than 10 mL between two injection sites. For swine: Administer subcutaneously only, in the neck. Recommended dose: 1 mL per 75 lbs. (34 kg) body weight (equivalent to 300 mcg/kg).

A withdrawal period has not been established for this product in pre-ruminating calves. Do not use in calves to be processed for veal.
