Delaware Chickens were developed in the 1940's by George Ellis in the state of Delaware by crossing Barred Plymouth Rocks and New Hampshire. Originally bred for the broiler industry, their popularity lasted about 20 years, until the even faster growing Cornish Rock cross was developed. These hardy chicken make great dual-purpose breeds to add to any flock. They have mostly white plumage with some black barring on the hackles and tail feathers. These Delaware chickens mature quickly with cockerels filling out by 16 weeks while the hens make great egg layers and begin laying around 6 months. The Delaware chickens do well in free-range environments and this should be kept in mind when selecting these birds for your backyard or farm. These rare chickens also tend to be calm and docile which makes them a great addition to any flock.
