The G0453Z 15" 3 HP Planer w/ Spiral Cutterhead recognized ahead of the rest of the 15" planers tested by WOOD Magazine for its combination of clean cuts and the ability to control snipe. The 4-row spiral cutterhead with 74 German-made indexable carbide inserts cut some of the finest surface finishes money can buy.

Each insert can be rotated up to three times to expose a new sharp edge for superior finish.

Reducing the cut to the size of a single insert makes for a cleaner cut and reduces noise compared to the traditional straight knife cut.

The 3 HP motor spins the cutterhead at 4800 RPM to plane your stock up to 15" wide by 8" thick, cutting as deep as 1/8" per pass.

Additionally, the G0453Z features a built-in mobile base, adjustable bed rollers, two-speed automatic board feed, and solid cast-iron extension wings.

Like all Grizzly planers, the G0453Z comes with a 1-year warranty which covers parts and assures the unit is free from factory defects. (Consumables are not covered by the warranty.)

The G0453Z manual was written by our U.S.-based Technical Documentation Department and is packed with useful information. The complete and easy-to-read manual makes it easier to assemble and maintain your planer.

The Grizzly Customer Service and Technical Support Teams are also U.S.-based. Parts for the planer may be available online and shipped from the Grizzly parts warehouse in Springfield, MO.

Great Addition to my Shop

Awesome addition to my shop. Great change from my 50 year old straight blade Metabo (no complaints, it served me well for 50 years. Only had to replace because armature burned out and there are no replacements available) My only minor criticism is the exhaust tube. It is in the way, but, I found a remedy for that. The 45 deg angle chute (part # P0550016 made for the 15" jet bolts up perfectly and fits better than the straight chute that comes with the G0453Z machine with only one flaw, it is made of plastic) The chute made of the plastic leaves a lot less air gap than the stock metal chute and definitely gets the exhaust tube out of the way. I was pleasantly surprised at how easily the 700lb+ machine is moved using the drop down wheel

We’re thrilled to hear that the planer has been a great addition to your shop! It’s great to hear that you found an effective solution using the 45° chute, and your insight about the fit and airflow differences between the plastic and metal chutes is incredibly helpful for other users. The mobility feature is designed to make shop workflow much smoother, and it’s great to hear it’s doing its job. Thank you for the excellent review and for sharing a photo of your setup!

A smooth surface with plenty of power.

This is my first stationary planer and it's performed as I had hoped. The spiral cutterhead creates a super smooth finish and the machine has the power to handle any size lumber that will fit in it. I would recommend this machine to anyone in the market for a professional quality planer that needs to take up a small footprint.

Yes, I recommend this product.

A better cutter head

I bought a 15" Grizzly planer (same as this) 4 years ago, and have had a good experience over-all. The machine is heavy and sturdy, as I've found most Grizzly products to be. Once set up and all fettling is done, smooth cuts are assured with the spiral cutterhead and individual, indexed cutter "cutlets" on the head. I find the planed surface after a cut to be fair but not finish-ready by a good measure. After 4 years of minor use - not the most used tool in the shop - I can say there are a few things that are mostly maintenance related but should be monitored and checked frequently. The wheel kit on the machine is manageable, but the front pivot wheel apparatus has a tendency to work itself loose if being moved frequently. The belt (x3) and drive system are accessible through the side panels and the belt cover plate. There are good instructions on tightening the belt properly, and proper maintenance should extend the belt life. Mine wore out in about 80 hours of use - which is premature - but was because I hadn't routinely monitored it for wear until it started to make noise. Fortunately I live close to the Bellingham showroom and was able to drive there and get new belts. It took me a little while to understand how to manage tensioning the belts, which includes the 3 horse power motor on a pivot that sinches the belts on the hub against the cutter head shaft above, and it isn't too difficult to accomplish; although it takes some fussing to get all 3 belts tensioned to where they don't oscilate against each other and still be within specification for tension. The upper gear box is a source of ongoing oil leakage, at an almost impercievable rate, but over time results in a small puddle on the floor. For this one it just needs a gasket replacement. The wing tables are great - heavy cast and polished, they weigh several pounds each. I do prefer them "on", others tend to leave them off for various reasons. The cutters provide a smooth surface ready for final finishing routines. As is the case with all machines with a top and bottom drive system, tend to develop "snipe" at the board ends, leaving a divot or groove that has to be seperately smoothed out. In general I think this machine is a good value for the current price, and I would definitely recommend the Grizzly 15" Planer with spiral cutter head for it's exceptional cutting quality and surface results.

Yes, I recommend this product.
