Q: Does the string break every time you hit a rock? What about pinecones?

1 Answer
  • Greenworks Tools
A: Hello Nikki, thank you for your question! The line won’t break every time you hit something, but contact with hard surfaces like rocks, concrete, or curbs will wear it down much faster and can cause it to snap. That’s normal for any string trimmer. Things like pinecones or softer debris are usually fine—they might nick the line over time, but they’re much less likely to break it instantly. The manual actually calls this out too—hard materials like stone and brick can cause quicker wear and breakage, so it’s best to trim with the tip of the line and avoid direct contact with those surfaces when possible. If you ever need tips on getting the most life out of your line, give us a shout at 1-888-909-6757 or connect with us on live chat—we’ve got you.

Q: Can this equipment operate on steep hillsides?

1 Answer
  • Greenworks Tools
A: Hello Philbert, thank you for your question. This walk-behind string trimmer is designed for use on relatively level or moderately uneven terrain. For safety and optimal performance, use caution on slopes and avoid operating on inclines greater than 15°. When trimming on a slope, it is recommended to move across the incline rather than up and down to help maintain stability and control. If you have further questions, please contact the Greenworks Customer Success Team at 1-888-909-6757 or reach out through Live Chat on our website.

Very handy and useful - but I need a part!

I bought this last year for cutting the weeds and grass on our rough ground. Because our ground is very rocky, a bladed mower is always hitting a rock here and there. The string is very adequate for cutting the weeds, and doesn't have the dangers of whacking a big rock unexpectedly with a medal blade whirling at high speeds. The big wheels are nice, the machine is lighter than many mowers, and the weight balanced well over the wheels. The guards work very well. When I use a hand string trimmer i end up with bits of vegetation all over my jeans and even a little on my glasses. With this, I am still clean at the end of the job. The battery will typically allow me to cut for about 45 minutes. It doesn't seem to use both batteries at once, but after depleting the one on the left, will switch to the right, but generally I have to at least stop the mower to get it to switch; sometimes I need to physically removed the depleted battery. I am really bummed that parts are not available. It doesn't get heavy use here - I still have 3 strings left of the pack of strings that came with it, but the bump guard on the head broke completely off yesterday. It appears to have been weakly spot welded into place. I guess I now have to find someone who can weld and do a good job to get that part back on. I can mow without it, but weed stems and grass wrap around the shaft, and I have to turn the mower over periodically and pull all that debris loose. Yesterday, I even got a sizeable piece of gravel up in the sleeve around the shaft, and it made considerable noise. Would be nice to just order the part, take the remainder of the old part off that is held on with a bolt and then bolt the replacement part on.
ProsConvenient, Easy to Use, Quiet, Effective, Powerful

Yes, I recommend this product.

Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback on the 60V 22" Wheeled String Trimmer! We are thrilled to hear that the trimmer's balance, guard coverage, and string setup have made clearing rocky, uneven terrain much safer and cleaner for you. We also sincerely appreciate your candid notes regarding the battery switching behavior and the broken bump guard, as we want your machine operating smoothly and reliably. Regarding the battery dual-port operation, the system is designed to draw from one battery until it reaches a low-voltage threshold before automatically transferring to the second. A brief pause in trigger engagement is often necessary to allow the internal control board to recognize the switch, but you should not need to physically remove a battery. To help ensure seamless automatic switching, verify that both battery packs are fully latched into place and that the terminal contacts inside the bay remain clean and clear of dust or fine debris. For the broken bump guard, we strongly caution against attempting to weld components onto the trimmer head assembly, as DIY welding can throw off shaft balance, generate dangerous metal fatigue, or impact warranty coverage. For visual guides on general tool maintenance, battery port care, and operating tips, please feel free to visit the Greenworks YouTube Channel. We want to help get your machine properly equipped so you don't have to deal with grass wrapping around the shaft, so please contact our Customer Success Team directly so we can look into part availability for your specific model, review your warranty options, and assist you with securing a replacement guard assembly. They can be reached either using the online chat function, on Greenworks Tools website, or by calling 1-888-909-6757.

Great tool except....

Like everything about this tool, except for getting refill whips. It came with a few that worked great, easy to replace, couple minutes and ready to go. But you don't have replacement line and I can't find any that are the same size and type. Why would you not offer replacement whip line?

Solid unit with an Achilles heal.

Solid unit for dry grasses and weeds. Lightweight and quiet with a simple single-piece line feed. One weakness is the spindle-ball or mower ball (metal cap that touches the ground). Wears out much faster than expected. We have rocky soil, so if you do too, have extra parts on hand… if you can find them.
ProsQuiet, Environmentally Safe, Effective

Yes, I recommend this product.

Hello LC-John. We appreciate you sharing this detailed feedback, it is helpful for others considering this unit. The 22" wheeled trimmer is designed to perform well in lighter-duty conditions like dry grass and standard weeds, but as you have noted, components such as the spindle/mower ball (ground contact point) can experience accelerated wear in abrasive environments like rocky soil. Frequent contact with hard surfaces increases friction and can shorten the lifespan of that part. To help extend durability, we recommend minimizing direct ground pressure when possible, periodically inspecting the cap for wear, and replacing it before excessive degradation affects performance. Availability of high-wear replacement parts can vary, so it may be beneficial to check periodically or connect with Greenworks success for assistance in locating compatible replacements or confirming part numbers. They can be reached either using the online chat function, on Greenworks Tools page, or by calling 1-888-909-6757.
