Q: Will this work to keep birds of prey out of my chicken coop?

  • A: I think this product will result in a lot of unintentional song bird deaths when they become entangled in it. It really is not a permanent product, and it becomes tangled extremely easily. It is an extreme nuisance to handle and install. Go to the MacGregor Deer Fence company and buy their heavy duty Elk fencing. That will keep everything out ! I do not use this netting anymore. Hungry deer came, hoofed this netting down, and tore it off my hemlock trees and rhododendron. After one too many ravages of my landscape, I built a 300-foot long deer fence with gates, and now my landscape is protected.

Its cheap for what it is and if used wisely can yield benefits fro anyone looking to exclude deer. They have poor depth perception and cannot judge distance well. A fence like this setup in DOUBLE FENCE SYSTEM will cheaply and effectively do the job, but, and this is a big but, you can not place a fence system like this anywhere without understanding Deer. Deer are intelligent, well sensed creatures that are always weighing the pros and cons of a place to feed. But their eyes are set to the side of their head to scan for predators which can limit theier ability to check depth. If two of these nets are are set 3-4 feet apart, it will be difficult for Deer to determine the landing area. Is the risk worth it for the deer. Most of the time, no. But as a prey animal there may be times when flight response will overpower their concern for broken ankles. In such a case, this would not stop such an incursion. This is a lightweight, tall mesh fence that will act as a physiological to isolate feeding deer from specific areas. This is not a welding wire fence that will hold a hog. One must be smart about placement. Do not place across known deer trails without providing some physical barrier. Log/brush piles, something that will make the deer say, "Im going around, not over or under." Don't place a fence like this without exit routes for wildlife. Don't fence the whole property at the same time. Let the deer know something is there and give them some time. Improve the visibility of the fencing by using streamers or other reflective materials tied to both of the DOUBLE FENCES. Its cheap, comparatively. Do a cost benefit of this vs. another full proof deer fence system. Throw in some t-posts and you can't beat this for value. Sure, you may have to replace sections of the netting over its life time but its a cheap, easy way to keep deer out of areas*. *see google for DOUBLE DEER FENCE!!

Worthless product

We used Deer-X netting to individually surround and protect thirty 2-3 ft. tall pine and spruce trees planted last spring. Each piece of 7-ft. netting was supported by three steel posts placed triangularly around each tree. The netting was up less than two weeks before deer decimated the netting (it tears very easily) and carried much of it off tangled in their antlers. Don't buy this product. You will be much happier giving your money to a favorite charity.

Use as intended

The netting is flexible and for the price fair quality. It isn't as strong as I had hoped for, but generally a pretty good product.

Works to keep birds out of the barn

I installed this netting in the rafters of my barn to keep the sparrows out. I fastened them to the rafters using lattice boards and a high-powered staple gun. So far, it’s working.
