Q: how do you move it to starting location once it is loaded? There is no "travel" mode?

1 Answer
  • A: Hi there! You're right that this model doesn't have a manual "travel" lever, but it uses a clever Auto-Stop feature instead! The spreader is designed to only dispense material once you reach a towing speed of 3 MPH, so you can easily move it to your starting location at a slower, walking pace without dropping any product. This smart technology is a real lifesaver because it prevents those accidental "burnt spots" on your lawn caused by stopping or starting too slowly!

Q: Why is lime not to be spread with this spreader

1 Answer
  • A: Hi, The manufacturer does not recommend the use of lime in the Chapin 8620B 150 lb Auto-Stop Tow Behind Spreader. However, pelletized lime can be spread in our professional contractor broadcast salt spreaders such as Chapin model 82400B. If you have any further questions please give our Chapin Technical Support Team a call at 1-800-444-3140, option 1, and reference this review.

Q: It says can’t be used with pelletized lime. Has anyone done that? I have a very small yard about a half an acre and may buy this anyway

A: Hi. We do not recommend the use of pelletized lime in the 8620B: “150-pound Poly Hopper Auto-Stop Tow Behind Spreader” because it can damage the unit or wont spread correctly. If you have any further questions you can also reach our Technical Support team at 1-800-444-3140 option 1. Thank you for your question.

I just bought it and it broke in 10 minutes

Not happy! The gears seized up with less then a 50lb bag of fertilizer throught it. I was in the market for a new "Home Owner" type tow behind spreader. I had a different company's product prior to this one and it lasted almost 10 yrs. I never had to do a single thing to it over then keep air in the tires. Im not hear to mention that company but the name starts with an A. As for this spreader aka 89620B, I got it home and started putting it together. The u it seemed strong and well built. Putting it together was easy enough but honestly the instructions just complicated things. There are a lot of issues with the manual. Once I had it together I seen zerk fitting and even though it does not mention adding grease in the initial build of the spreader, there was no grease on the axle bearings so I thought It would be good to add some. I added a 50lb bag of fertilizer to the hopper and started pulling at about 3 - 4 mph. I wasn't using the thing for 10 minutes and then I noticed the drive wheel wasn't spinning. I was basically just pulling the spreader but no fertilizer was coming out. I had to stop what I was doing, get several 5gal buckets and move the fertilizer from the hopper to the buckets so I ould get the spreader up to look at it. I dont know how or why but the gears in this thing are completely trashed. I spent all the money, gas to the store and time for this product and it did NOT meet my expectations. I did put as request into customer service so we'll see how this goes. I may take it back to the store later this week but im a good 45 min drive away from the tractor supply. Ill update after I hear back.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Worked well for the first 3 years, now is a frozen up piece of rust that just skids along rather than "spreading" anything.

This spreader is not worth the money. It rusts and parts break. I kept it clean and lubricated. The spreader still rusted and broke. Customer service would not sell me the parts I needed to fix it.

No, I do not recommend this product.
