Q: Our chipmunks are just pushing the trap door back up and escaping with no problem. Trap door springs are super weak. Should they be so easy to push up from inside?

Q: Can it catch rats?

1 Answer
  • A: It is not made for Rats as they do not like to use their heads to push open the door, which is why we created the ratinator. That said - I have heard of people catching a rat in the chipmunkinator.

Almost a Five

Read the reviews on this trap, then went to Tractor Supply to look at it. It looked so flimsy that I almost didn't buy it. TSC told me if I didn't like it I could return it, so I bought. Other reviewers are correct; yes, the door "springs" are worthless. I found a couple of small springs in my pile of stuff that fit on the doors and kept them closed, but were not too strong to keep the 'munks from entering (see photo). Also, if you are using this trap with just earth or grass underneath, you need to put something under it to keep the critters from burrowing to get the bait. I just cut up the box it came in and used that. I baited it with mixed bird seed, scattering a little bit around the trap.( Chipmunks like lots of different things, but, they LOVE sunflower seed, so why use anything else?) Caught the first one within 15 minutes, emptied, added more seed, left it for a couple more hours and had 3 at once. My total so far is over 40 in about a week. With the additional springs on the doors, they cannot get out. With only the furnished "springs" they can get out, so you will need to be very diligent in emptying the trap if you don't modify it. I guess chipmunks are really stupid- even with one already in the trap, others will go in, I have had as many as 4 at once. Trap is definitely more durable than it looks, I caught a full size brown squirrel and it could not escape and did not damage the trap. Except for the lousy door "springs" I would have given this 5 Stars.

I had high hopes, but it’s a chipmunk feeder

It just doesn’t work. They go in, grab seeds, lift the door and leave. I guess everyone else has dumb chipmunks but mine are smart. I’m hoping I’m able to return. It’s too much money for a trap that hasn’t caught a single chipmunk. I was hoping to avoid a kill trap but I’m out of options.

Amazing at catching the little destroyers!!

We’ve been having a huge chipmunk problem! They are awfully cute, but they are very destructive. We’ve tried multiple other types of traps and my husband found this one and picked one up. Much better accessibility! We put it on our deck use some black oiled sunflower seeds, and literally got two within a couple hours. The capacity is more than that! A third one was interested, but there wasn’t enough bait to lure. We’ve already released them miles away!!! The trap is reset and we’re ready to do it again!! great product!!!

Yes, I recommend this product.

Good trap

I was able to catch a chipmunk with 2 days of purchase , moving it around and disguising it. I was able to relocate it. The handles should be higher as I used a pole to slip it through. I didn’t want to chance a scratch. The bait catches are not easy to release with a live animal on it. It’s a bit clunky but I was able to catch it. I definitely would t want to catch 20.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Works Perfectly

This trap worked perfectly when it was placed on a hard surface like cement. I sprinkled sunflower seeds at the two entrances and created a trail of sunflower seeds up to the center of the trap where I placed a lot more. This trap worked perfectly, and the chipmunks were easily caught. I then drove the chipmunk to his new home and released him into a woods far away. All the springs and doors worked perfectly. If you place the trap on the ground, the chipmunk will go under the trap to eat the seeds. The trap must be placed on cement, a board, or firm cardboard. This will prevent the chipmunk from going under the trap. I am very happy I bought this trap. I wish I had bought it years ago.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Great chipmunk trap! We have rehomed over 100 chipmunks in the last two years. Used birdseed to set the trap. Sometimes caught two at a time!
