A wheel is the round part that rolls. A caster is the full assembly, including the wheel, its supporting bracket and the hardware that attaches it to a cart, cabinet or other equipment.
Swivel casters have a bracket that rotates, letting the wheel change direction. Rigid casters, also called fixed casters, keep the wheel facing one direction. Some carts combine both types.
Plate-mount casters attach through holes in a flat mounting plate. Stem-mount casters attach through a post that fits into a socket or threaded opening. The mounting style depends on the attachment points on your equipment.
Twin-wheel casters have two wheels mounted side by side in one caster assembly. Single-wheel casters have one wheel per assembly. Both terms describe the wheel arrangement, not the way the caster attaches.
Caster wheels are common on tool cabinets, shop carts, rolling workbenches and parts bins. Around the barn, you may also find them on tack trunks and supply carts.
