A wheel is the round part that rolls. A caster includes the wheel and the mounting assembly that connects it to a cart, cabinet or other equipment.
A swivel caster rotates at its mounting point, letting the wheel change direction. A rigid caster has a fixed mounting bracket that keeps the wheel facing one direction. Some equipment combines both types.
Common mounting styles include plate mounts and stem mounts. Plate mounts have a flat mounting plate with bolt holes, while stem mounts have a post that connects to a socket or threaded opening on the equipment.
Casters are common on rolling tool cabinets, shop carts, mobile workbenches and material-handling equipment. Around the barn or workshop, you'll also find them on some feed carts and rolling storage units.
Tread is the outer surface of the caster wheel that contacts the floor. It's a separate part of the caster's design from the mounting bracket, swivel assembly and axle.
