Swivel caster wheels are wheel assemblies with a pivoting mount that can rotate a full 360 degrees. The assembly typically includes a wheel, axle, fork and swivel joint.
A swivel caster pivots at its mounting point, while a rigid caster keeps its wheel facing one direction. Some carts combine both styles, with rigid casters at one end and swivel casters at the other.
Swivel casters are common on shop carts, rolling tool cabinets, movable workbenches and equipment stands. Around the farm or garage, you'll often find them on rolling storage and work equipment.
Plate-mount casters attach through holes in a flat mounting plate. Stem-mount casters attach through a projecting stem that fits into a socket or threaded opening on the equipment.
A single-wheel swivel caster has one wheel within its fork. A twin-wheel swivel caster has two wheels side by side beneath one swivel assembly. These terms describe the wheel arrangement, not the mounting style.
