Good for horse fence.

I have used these for years and they have worked great! You do need to keep your wire electrified or your animals may pull or break the wire and insulators and yes don't nail them too tight to the post. I am building a new pasture this spring and am going to use these for the middle strand of electric and am using the 5" for the top section of fence to keep the horses back off top of fence.

Waste of money

I purchased and installed several bags of these insulators when I built my fence last year. I have since had to replace pretty much every single one of them over the course of that last year - some didn't even last a month. They are a complete waste of money. They tend to crack at the top just above the nail and then the slightest pressure on the wire and they fall off. I also realized the design flaw when installing these and made sure not to nail them really tightly, otherwise they would crack during installation. I started replacing them with screw in insulators and that has worked well so far. I should have spent the extra money and bought the screw in ones to begin with. Good luck!
